Hearing Isn't Enough

“believe in God the Father Almighty Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in”

Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate. It was

crucified died and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he

rose again. He ascended into heaven and he seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life of everlasting. Amen. first shallopy world without end amen. Our first mystery. Yesterday we ended with a question.

We've been listening to homilies, consuming Catholic content, and even praying for years. So why haven't we been transformed? Jesus gives the answer at the end of the sermon on the mount when he asks, "Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and not do what I tell you?" That question stopped me dead in my tracks. "Why do I say to Jesus, Lord, Lord, but then not do what he wants? What's the hold-up?" Now granted, I'm in good company,

saying Paul himself complained, "I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do." Maybe that's the answer to yesterday's question. We hear Jesus, we even call him Lord, "But are we doing what he tells us?" We need to take this question to Jesus personally.

“Lord, why do I call you Lord? But still resist what you ask of me. What's getting in the way?”

And then we need to listen because Jesus is about to tell us what to do. Our Father, who art in heaven, howl it would be your name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. “who comes to me, listens to my words, and does them. Now, I've come to think of this passage”

as Jesus himself teaches us how to meditate, and he gives us three simple steps. Come, listen, do, first, come to me, meditation begins by coming to Jesus. Not merely reading something, or listening to something, but coming to a person to Jesus. And in the rosary, we come to Jesus with Mary. This is why daily meditation is really a daily appointment with Jesus. We stop whatever else we're doing, and deliberately place ourselves in His presence.

Jesus, here I am. That's the beginning of meditation. So ask yourself, am I faithful to my daily appointment with Jesus? “listen to His words. That's what we're trying to do in the rosary. We come to Jesus with Mary,”

and then we listen. And during these rosary meditations, many things from the Word of God are

and then stay with it. Maybe it's a sentence, a phrase, or an idea, and when something strikes you,

“don't just move on, locking on it, think about it, apply it to your life, talk to Jesus about”

it. For example, maybe today the words that struck you are, why do you call me Lord Lord, and not do what I tell you? Good, stay there. During the our Father and Hail Mary's, think about those words. Why don't I do what Jesus asks? And then talk with Him about it in your heart. Jesus, I know what you want me to do here, but I don't want to. Why? What am I afraid of? What am I attached to? That's meditation. It's to listen to His words, to notice what strikes you, stay with it,

think about it, apply it to your life, and talk with Jesus about it.

Oh, my Jesus, forgive us, our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to have an especially those most in need of thy mercy. Our fourth mystery, but Jesus doesn't stop with coming to Him and listening, He says, whoever comes to me, listens to my words, and does them. So here's the missing link. The yesterday, we learned that meditation exercises the intellect and the resolution exercises the will, and here Jesus gives us exactly that method.

Listen to my words and act on them. Think about my words and put them into practice.

“So toward the end of our meditation, we should always ask, Jesus, what do you want me to do today?”

That's the resolution, and the resolution needs to be specific and concrete. Don't resolve, I need to be more patient. Instead, today, when so and so irritates me, I won't complain about them. Don't resolve, you know, I should pray more. Instead,

time. That's a resolution. Then comes the most important part. Do it because the resolution is the

“bridge between hearing God's word and being transformed by God. And Jesus gives the method”

come to me, listen to my words, and do them. Meditation and a resolution. That's the method of Jesus. Finally, Jesus tells us why this matters. The person who comes to him, listens to his words, and does them, he's like a man building his house, who dug deeply, and laid the foundation on rock. The flood came, the river burst against the house, but it could not shake it because it had been

well built. Then Jesus describes the other man, the one who listens and does not act on the word, he's like a person who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The flood came and the house collapsed. Now, notice something very important. Both men here, they both take in a lot of content. The difference isn't that one hears the word of God and the other doesn't. The difference is that one acts on it. We can listen to this daily rosary podcast. We can consume all kinds of content.

But if nothing changes in the way we live, something essential is missing.

The goal of meditation is not simply to have good thoughts about Jesus. It's to encounter him,

“listen to him, and then do what he tells you. That's the only way we'll be transformed. That's why”

the resolution is so important. Yesterday, we learned that repeated actions become habits, and habits transform the person. That's how we build the house. One meditation, one resolution,

because hearing, consuming content is not enough. We have to come to Jesus. Listen and think about

“what he says, make a concrete resolution, and then do it. So remember three words,”

come, listen, act, come to Jesus with Mary, listen to what he says to you, and then do what he says. You will be digging deep and building your life on rock, and when the flood comes, your house will stand. Our father who arts in heaven, how it would be your name, that kingdom come, that will be done on earth as it is in heaven. So what struck you with this meditation? It's never easy to figure out how to turn a thought into an

action, because I'm thinking a lot, and I'm definitely not building that concrete foundation. I'm kind of notorious for making really big plans, or coming up with, oh, we're going to really transform our lives by doing this or that thing, and then talking about it and never doing it. So I was partially reflecting on what do I need to do to actually start putting things into action. And part of that also means meditating really specifically, like you said, and asking not just,

I want to do meditation, but when am I going to do meditation, or when am I going to make that

“action into a reality? When am I going to do this specific thing? How am I going to get it done?”

Now, transparently, or to give a better example, I was thinking about a good question to ask myself was, what am I constantly hearing Christ say, and not putting into action? I think one of

those things for me is never making a habit out of confession. It's always something that I wait

time, and it's too many steps away to get it into practice. But if I, I'm always trying to avoid

just the habit of knowing exactly when I'm going to go to confession like you do, where it's just, it's going to come up. It's always going to be in your schedule. And then my follow-up to thinking about that wasn't just to say, yeah, I'm going to make the habit of confession. I thought, well, my first action can be looking up the confession times knowing the confession times, even a more specific resolution as a small step to help cement that is to talk about it with others, share

my intention, ask for accountability, and even to print out the confession times, or I, my plan

“is, I'm going to make them my phone back around so that I'm reminded. And the most important piece”

to making the habit of going to regular confession? Yeah, a regular examination of conscience. I would actually say, if you start with a regular examination of conscience, you'll go to confession. Well, I would also say that that's kind of too full. I mean, not in a bad way, but that they feed each other because if you have a regular confession time, you're, that's when I'm suddenly stuttering to find all of my sins all at once. And if I know it's coming up, I'm not going to worry

about it when I'm in line. I'm going to worry about it the day before confession. I'm going to be worrying about it throughout the week. Not worrying in a bad way. It's true. A good, an excellent resolution would be, I'm going to do an examination of conscience today, and I'm going to set a time for confession. Yeah. And to try to make that continuous. But just that these actions are usually

“broken down into a lot of little actions that can help me because I think I'm someone who needs a lot”

of guidelines to keep me in or little reminders, little things that will. Once I stop my meditation, it's so easy to just walk away from my resolution, but there's a lot of

little things I can do to remind myself to make sure that the action is always the outcome.

I have to write down my resolution and keep it with me. Yeah. And this is why because our lady wants the rosary to be a meditation that transforms you, this is why we pray the rosary this way to give you the word of God, scripture tradition in the Magisterium, then you have time to think about it while you pray the our Father 10 Hail Mary's in glory be. And it's why we always

“try to suggest your resolution at the end. And if you only remember one thing, remember this.”

No, seriously. Our resolution is always too vague. It's a wish. Yeah.
