“The tenth command that tells us not to covet our neighbor's goods in other words”
It tells us not to be envious or in the words of the catechism It tells us that envy must be banished from the human heart Now the opposite of envy is to follow our Lord's commandment to love our neighbor as ourself But envy sees someone else's success as a threat to me Love in your neighbor as your self
sees someone else's success as a gain to me But there may be a sense in which loving our neighbor as ourselves can be helped By learning how to love ourselves properly or to put it differently it may be that Before we can thank God for his blessings to other people We should thank him for the way he has already blessed us
Our Father who arts in heaven hollowed be your name by kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven Give us a stayer daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us And lead us not into temptation. “Oh my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to have an”
especially those most in need of thy mercy. Our second mystery, in what is arguably GK Chesterton's most brilliant novel, man alive, the main character does something to prevent himself from ever coveting his neighbor's goods and you'll never guess what he does. He locks himself outside his own house and then after dark, he pretends to be a thief and he breaks into his own house and starts to steal from his own possessions. In other words, because the grass is always greener on the other side of the
fence, he mentally puts himself on the other side of the fence to admire his own lawn.
He looks at his own external blessings, his house, his family, the good food and drink and his kitchen, which happens to be his favorite food and drink and he thinks to himself, what a lucky guy that is, wouldn't it be nice to be him? So do this when you are tempted to be envious of other people's stuff, their positions or income, houses or vacations, imagine your homeless, friendless, penniless, standing outside your own house looking in and think, what lucky people live here?
“I wish I had a life like that. In fact, here's what you should do. Tonight, after it gets dark,”
turn the lights on in your house and then go outside in the street and stand there and look at the nice warm, soft glow and imagine to yourself, hype that there's a really wonderful place in there. And then realize it's your place and thank God and go inside. If you're going to envy somebody, envy yourself, if you're going to appreciate somebody's blessings from God, start with your own. Our father, who art in heaven, hollowed be your name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us a stay, our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed our Thal among women, blessed he's a fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed our Thal among women...
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us in our ensnowen at the hour of our death, amen.
“Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed our Thal among women, blessed he's a fruit of thy womb, Jesus.”
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us in our ensnowen at the hour of our death, amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed our Thal among women, blessed he's a fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us in our ensnowen at the hour of our death, amen. Hail Mary, be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, as now and of our shall be, world without end, amen.
Oh, my Jesus.
Forgive us, our sins, save us from the fires of hell.
Lead all souls to have an especially those most in need of thy mercy.
“Our third mystery. Another basis for envy is when you let yourself think that other people have”
more personal gifts than you do. When you think about the abilities, talent, skills that other people have, and you don't, then you start to classify yourself as a loser, and you get resentful of other people for being able to do what you can't. Here again, it might be best to begin by praising God for the way he's made you. The solmist cries out to God, I praise you, Lord, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. That's not pride. In fact, it's the opposite of pride,
because it's thanking God for gifts you didn't earn, and for a design, he generously bestowed on you. Now, maybe you're thinking, I don't have any gifts, talents or skills. I have nothing to offer. There's nothing naturally special about me, but that's a really blasphemous thing to say.
“It's actually an insult to God. It's saying, well, at least in this case, God, you weren't paying”
attention and you really messed up when you manufactured something totally un-is-trusting and redundant. God doesn't make redundant stuff. He makes individuals. Each of whom has something utterly unique and valuable, and sometimes it helps if we can start to articulate even a little bit what God has given us that makes us even a little unique and valuable. It might be best to begin with the people in your
life who would never recover if you hadn't been there. I mean, that's the great
brilliance of the movie. It's a wonderful life. When you can say, "Lord, I praise you, for I'm fearfully and wonderfully made." Then, and only then, can you also look around and appreciate instead of lament the distinctive gifts he's also given other people. So, the first step in being thankful for God's personal gifts to others might be expressing your gratitude for the personal gifts God has given you. Our Father who art in heaven, hell it would be your name.
By kingdom come by, we'll be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this to air, day the bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with the blessed earth, All among women blessed is a fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us and earth is now in the hour of our death,
amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with the blessed earth, All among women blessed is a fruit of thy womb, Jesus. “Lead all souls to have an especially those most in need of thy mercy. Our fourth mystery,”
CS Lewis has a beautiful reflection on the humility God wants us all to have, and it's essentially a sweeping appreciation of all goodness, including your own.
Here's what he says. God wants every person to be so free from any bias in his own
favor that he can rejoice in his own talents as frankly and gratefully as he can rejoice in the talents of his neighbor. Just as he can rejoice in his sunrise or an elephant or a waterfall. He wants each person in the long run to be able to recognize the good in everything, even himself. He wants to restore to us a new kind of self love, a charity and gratitude for all selves, including our own.
When we have really learned to love our neighbor as ourselves,
then we will be allowed to love ourselves as our neighbors. Does that make sense?
Good. That's perfect then. We just need to celebrate all good. The good of a waterfall, of an elephant, of an architect, of the guy at work, and the guy driving the bus, celebrate the goodness of your kids and your spouse, and celebrate the goodness of yourself.
“That's what God does, and that's what he wants you to do. Celebrate the goodness of everything,”
and include yourself in that. Our father, who art in heaven, hell, would be your name. Like Kingdom Come by will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us a stare, do the bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And let us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, amen. They owe Mary full of grace. The Lord is with the blessed art all among women. Blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us and our is now in the hour of our death, amen. They owe Mary full of grace. The Lord is with the blessed art all among women. Blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. “gratitude is the only way to live out the tenth commandment and gratitude is the great”
defense, the weapon against envy, but it doesn't come cheap. You'll have to work on it. So, remember, you're supposed to go outside, well, first turn all the nice soft lights on, then go outside tonight, look in, see that wonderful place and envy it, and then go back inside, sit down with a piece of paper, a notebook, and make a rigorous list of all your blessings.
Write down the way God has forgiven you, the way that he's blessed you with never wondering if you'll
have another meal, write down the family and friends who love you, write down the beauty of the natural world, write down with humble gratitude, your personality traits, and the way you've been able to enrich the lives of others, and then write down the goods he's given other people. The
“genius and holiness and cleverness and strength and humor that he's distributed so generously to”
all his children, and then thank God for all of it, and banish envy from your heart. Our Father who art in heaven, hollowed be your name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us a stare, daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we free of those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, deliver us from evil amen. and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now never shall be, world without end amen.
Oh, my Jesus. Forgive us, our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to have an especially those most in need of thy mercy. Say, Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God review him, we humbly pray and do that little prince of the heavenly host by the power of God cast into hell, Satan in all of the evil spirits, but proud throughout the world seeking the rune of souls.
In the name of the Father and the Son of the Holy Spirit.
G.K. Chesterton's book, "Man alive." I have not. Although I always think of that old
“kind of 1950's style curse. It's not even a curse. It's an exclamation where people go, "Man alive."”
Oh, where did that come from? I don't know where that came from, but this little book by Chesterton's really small, very delightful. I should read it, I like to. I'm curious to see how that fits into a book. That anecdote you talked about with a man breaking into his own home. The whole book is about that. That's incredible. The whole book. I am a little bit worried that after this episode, we're going to hear all these reports of these random people getting arrested
breaking into their own homes. And we'll say they listen to the podcast or they've read Man alive. Just go outside and look at, look into your home tonight. You won't look weird at all. Everyone else will be in their homes on their screen so they won't notice. And you have a nice new house. I was just actually thinking about it. I was like, it'll be very funny.
I can imagine instead of the task of moving, I can instead imagine that I'm robbing myself. I'm robbing myself blind, truly. Yeah, you can go into where you currently live and you can take all the stuff out. I'm getting from this house. This is crazy. And no one's going to stop me. It's pretty incredible.
I do this. I walk a lot and I walk a lot of times at night. And as I walk through the neighborhoods, there's this wonderful glow coming from the windows of
“all the homes. And as I walk through the neighborhood, I think what wonderful people and places are in”
there. I bet there's just such goodness in there. But we don't think about that with our own homes. Because so much of our joy for things is now wrapped up in anticipation. And so we don't actually, all the things that we currently have are things that we once anticipated, things that we once really wanted. It's even one way to change it respective on and just think about how much a younger version of you wanted what you now have with such intensity.
But then it just dies out once you have it. It's why it's not a very, a lot of people don't like this song because they're right to say that it's immoral and it's about an attempt to cheat. But the pinnacle a lot of song. Oh, I hate that song. Oh, come on. It's so iconic. It is. It is. But because he realizes how much in looking from the other side,
he realizes that the person he's always wanted is actually the person he's with. I know
but the problem with that song is both of them. Both of them are intending to cheat. Yes. Which is terrible.
“But I think it's the the less classy moral good version of this story of trying to rob your own”
house where he realizes that everything he wants is everything he has. And it's just partly that it's not that she's fallen into some terrible routine that's boring and dull. He's fallen into a routine. That's just what she answers the ad. So she must have too. Well, she must have felt the same way. But part of it is just looking at your life and realizing the things you have. And I like
that it is just about a change in perspective. Well, I mean what you're saying is he never knew that
she liked peanut clots. Well, we take things for granted. That's the that's the idea. I like what you're saying. No matter what age we are, we should think back to a time when we didn't have what's occurred in our lives and think about how desperately we wanted what we actually have now. Yeah. And even if you're even if you're elderly and you've lost a spouse or your family's moved away or your health is not what it was, you can still look back and to a time when you didn't have
all the things that will be great things that occurred in your life and realize, wow, what I long for it happened. Thank God. Yeah. And then look forward to heaven when all the good things are restored. Yeah. That's the big problem. We take things for we take all our blessings for granted. Well, thanks for your conversation. Thank you. I still don't like that song. You got to admit it's
Catchy.
yot rock and you love yot rock. That is not yot. That is deadly. That's terrible. That was never
even rock. We were going to let people debate whether or not the peanut clots song is yot rock.
It's not yot rock and it wasn't even good music fact then.
“Glory be to the father. No way. I don't do that. What's your what you catch phrase?”
Let's be apostles of friendship. Good conversation and the rosary.
Share this with others. See the bad songs. Just throw me off. Bad music throws me off. No more bad music talk.
