Holy Mary Mother of God Pray for us sinners now in at the hour of our death amen. Laurie be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit

as it was in the beginning as now never shall be world without end amen

our first mystery The fastest way to kill a friendship is not betrayal It's neglect we all know what it feels like You make time for someone you reach out you give yourself to the relationship and they're always too busy They never respond they never make time for you

Eventually the friendship dies Now think about this God is given himself to you and Jesus said it at the last supper No longer do I call you servants I call you friends God offers friendship

But do we respond or are we the friend who's always too busy always distracted?

Always canceling always choosing something else

Because this is what the third commandment is about Not just keeping a day not just going to mass it's about this God offers himself in friendship and do we make the time for him and He asks will you receive me or will you choose something instead of me? The third commandment's not just a rule. It's God saying I really want to be with you. Do you have time for me?

Please don't choose something instead of me Because friendship can't exist without time together and if we never make time for him We are not just failing at a rule We're choosing other things instead of the one who is offering himself to us Or father who art in heaven hollowed be your name that kingdom come by will be done on earth as it is in heaven

Give us a dear daily bread and for give us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us And lead us not into temptation But deliver us from evil Iman Hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee blessed earth all among women blessed is a fruit of thy womb Jesus Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us in earth's noun at the hour of our death a man

lead all souls to have an especially those most in need of thy mercy our second mystery

We always seem to forget that God gives us the commandments

Not because it makes him any better off but because it makes us so much better off All the commandments are for our sake and Jesus makes this abundantly clear when he says The Sabbath was made for man not man for the Sabbath We are given the third commandment to keep holy the Sabbath for the same reason we're given all the other commandments So we can have the one friendship above all others we need and so that we can be happy

And as it turns out happiness and rest Friendship and rest Are inextricably linked together

Our Father who art in heaven. How it would be your name that kingdom come by will be done on earth as it is in heaven

Give us a stare daily bread and forgive us our trespasses As we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not in to temptation but deliver us from evil amen Hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee blessed our Thalman women blessed is a fruit of thy womb Jesus Holy Mary mother of God Pray for us in earth's noun at the hour of our death a man

lead all souls to have an especially those most in need of thy mercy our third mystery

When God rested on the seventh day it wasn't out of exhaustion God doesn't get exhausted

When scripture says that God rested from the work he had done it meant that h...

in the good he had done he had made a good world full of good things and so he devoted the seventh

day to appreciating it that's what rest means it means to delight in God to delight in your friends

to delight in your family and in the good world the God made and the good things within it rest means stopping your work so you can appreciate the good world

that's what happiness ultimately is appreciating the goodness of God and the reality he has made

that's what heaven is and that's what at least one day of our week is supposed to be too what the third commandment consists in ultimately is a very loving father telling his busy distracted anxious children hey at least one day out of the week I want you to be happy I'm telling you no I'm commanding you take some time be happy

our father who art in heaven hollowed be your name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven

give us a stay our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us for

at the hour of our death amen glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit as He was in the beginning as now and of our shall be world without end amen oh my Jesus forgive us our sins save us from the fires of hell lead all souls to have an especially those most in need of thy mercy our fourth mystery why did the Israelites so often refuse to rest on the Sabbath why do we so often fill our Sundays with work and homework and catching up

the answer is very simple we don't trust God we don't believe friendship with him will make us

happy and we think we have to make our own happiness by our own sweat and cleverness

this is basically a kind of self idolatry idolatry remember is when people would worship

the work of their hands they would hope for salvation in a little statue that they themselves had made that's why we won't let go of our work we'd rather be anxious and busy than happy

At rest in our friendship with the Lord because we too worship the work of ou...

we too hope for salvation and things we ourselves have made but Sunday is a day to remember that

God is good and that God is in control which means if we entrust our happiness to God

we can stop stressing out and stop frantically trying to get stuff done at least for 24 hours because the Lord has it well in hand and our chances of being happy being saved are infinitely better when we rely on God rather than ourselves this is why Jesus came to assure us that we didn't have to be constantly freaking out and constantly working he said come to me all you who labor and are overburdened and I will give you rest Sunday is a day to come to God

to come to God in friendship and in trust our happiness to Him and then look around and appreciate

the goodness of what the Lord has done or Father Wharton heaven, hollowed be your name,

thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us a stay our daily bread

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil amen. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, as now in the Rochaube world without end amen. Oh, my Jesus. Forgive us, our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to have and especially those most in need of thy mercy. Our fifth mystery, we all live busy lives,

full schedules, constant demands, always something to get caught up on. But a busy life without

real friendship with God and with others, it's empty. That's why God commands us to stop

to step away from our work and our over-schedule lives and to be with Him and with others. Sunday is the great day for friendship. First, friendship with God at mass and in prayer, and then friendship with others. So what's our resolution with this meditation? Because every meditation has to have a resolution, otherwise what's the point? Well, that's set aside Sunday.

I mean, the whole day invites someone to do something good with you.

be together, and while you do, pay attention to them, delight in the person with you, delight in

the good world God has given, because this is what Sunday is for, not just rest from work,

but the opportunity to delight in friendship with God, to delight in friendship with others. Isn't it crazy? God made the whole world for friendship. Or Father who art in heaven, hollowed be your name, that kingdom come by will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us a stay, our daily breading, for give us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was the beginning, as now and ever shall be, world without end, amen. Oh, my Jesus. Forgive us, our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to have an especially those most in need of thy mercy.

Same Michael, the archangel defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God review, can we humbly pray, and do that old prince of the heavenly host by the power of God, cast into hell, Satan, in all the evil spirits, who prowth throughout the worlds, seeking the root of souls, in the name of the Father, in the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Amen. Well, what, what, you got a goofy, you got a smirk on your face over there. What are you, what are you reflecting on? How good Sundays are.

Sundays are my, are my favorite day, and I think it's so incredible that it's so

genuinely effective in our life because of what Sunday says, what's taking work off and what going to mass says, because most of the things that people really struggle with when it comes to, well, I can't, it's so hard to make it to mass on Sundays because the kids are out of control, or I really need to get, I have so much work I need to catch up on, and I need the money, and it's very real problems, but every time you go to mass, you are saying it's going to be okay.

The kids are going to be okay, the kids are going to go crazy at mass. Yeah. Or we're going to find, we're going to be taking care of. The money is going to be taking care of. I can stop, I can rest in every time you do that. It's like exposure therapy. You're saying, I can stop, I can walk away from my phone for an hour. I can walk away from everything from an hour and truly set it down and every time you set it down, you go,

It's going to be okay.

And just rejoice, because without that, I think about all the other things that I think are

rest. When I'm watching TV or something, it's just, I'm losing myself in something, but I'm not

actually running away from the stress. I'm quite literally, it's like if you've ever played a video game and you get into a kind of a hairy situation, you've got like a monster you're facing. When I was younger, I played a game called Skyrim and I went down to this cave, this script, and there were all these skeletons all over and I was so scared that I stopped playing right there. I paused to the game. They didn't go away. I just paused to the game and I knew they were right

there. So I never opened up the game again because I was like, they're going to get me the moment.

I opened that game up. And that's about feels when I binge something because I'm stressed. I'm literally like, I'm just putting all the stress on pause and that it never gets better.

It never goes away. The fear never goes away. It's just waiting for you.

Mass isn't like that. You're fully present. When I'm there, I'm not stressed about the thing because it's actually something I can do. I can show up at mass and offer it up to God and say, "I hope you take care of me. I hope you take care of all of this and he does." And I come away from it peaceful. I can go back into the cave and I can take out all of those skeletons. But it arms us for our whole week, our whole life. It's beautiful.

One of my favorite experiences every week is that usually we sit at Sunday Mass with our four grand sons. My nephews. And yes. And one of them, often it's Elliot, will say, as soon as Mass is over. Papa, family supper, family supper today. Today is family supper. You're so excited. He has connected together. Mass is the day that we get to have family supper.

It's beautiful getting to connect community to that. It doesn't stop when Mass ends. Because we're with our loved ones and we're celebrating the Mass together. And then we're with them afterwards.

I always set aside time on Sundays. I assume I don't put anything else on my calendar. I assume

I'll be able to get brunch with friends right after Mass and that will have family dinner in the evening. And I don't have to plan anything else. I just, I don't touch Sundays. Those are just, I know those things will happen. And it is so beautiful and necessary every time. Since I have totally set aside Sunday for Mass and Sunday supper. Now full disclosure, I work my tail off on Sundays. You do. You cook all day. But it's not the work I get paid for.

And it's all for friendship. Yeah. People forget or conflate two terms together. Leisure is not laziness. Leisure is not melting into your couch and turning your brain off. Leisure can be hobbies. It can be or it can be being with others. It's, it mostly consists of those things. Mass is leisure. Because leisure essentially is delighting in the good of the world. I don't delight in YouTube shorts. I'll tell you that much. And most of the time when I'm wasting away,

if I'm binging something, I know even while I'm experiencing it that I'm probably over-tired. I'm uncomfortable. I don't want to keep watching. My brain feels like it's on fire or turning into mush. But you can't get out of it because it's kind of incapacitating you. That's the opposite of what Leisure does. Leisure arms you it. It makes you excited for work, excited for life, excited for the next step. You transition more easily out of Leisure into the other responsibilities

of the day or the week, then out of binging. That's so true. An addiction. So what do you think is a very practical resolution? We have built a fairly solid habit about

Sundays. What's a practical resolution for someone who hasn't? I think trying to commit to something

that is completely habitual on Sundays. So saying something like, I'm going to do this no matter what on Sundays to connect real celebration to Mass. Not, oh, maybe we'll have time to do something

With friends or with family, but I'm going to do this and I'm going to let ot...

that I'm doing this no matter what. Sometimes people won't show up, but you have to slowly build

up those habits. Yeah. We've many times especially my roommate and I will drive to Mass together.

And sometimes you show up and know none of our other friends or family members are there. And we

always want to do brunch with people after Mass even if it's at someone's house or something.

But sometimes no one's there. Sometimes it's just the two of us or but as time has gone on, people always know we're going to wait outside and be like who wants brunch. And those people start to appear. Yeah, it just begins with inviting one person. We're just letting people know even

as they leave. Yeah. Invite one person. And if you don't have one person to invite,

ask the Holy Spirit to provide that person. You might be very surprised too because there's there's been many times that we say that to everyone we see after Mass. And there's one time I was like this is the weirdest mix of people that they don't know each other at all. I kind of know like a few of these people. But this is going to be the strangest brunch and it turned out fantastic and entirely different angle on conversation and entirely different mix of people. But you just got

all at the Holy Spirit and all that one. Yeah. I do have one other thing to say which was

about a week ago which is by time this is released. It'll be many weeks ago. But I went to

first watch near our church with a friend for brunch and a lot of people from our church also showed

up at the same first watch. And at the end of brunch, we went to pay and they were like no no it's been taken care of. And I didn't know any of the other people anyone in the restaurant didn't recognize anyone just knew that they went to our church. I have no idea who paid for a lunch. No idea. So if anyone knows, you want a little bit who that was, I want to thank them. That was so kind. It made my whole Sunday. And even if this doesn't result in me figuring out who got us brunch because

I was so so kind. Be someone who buys other people brunch. It's beautiful. I like that because

of Sundays, you get to serve us when you offer dinner and a dessert. But we're always given the

opportunity to help our friends out. And some weeks, you know, I need a bit more help financially with my brunch. Other weeks, I have friends that need more of that help. Or it just gives us the opportunity to love and celebrate and practice. So that's that. Thank you to those people, whoever they are. That's a great resolution. Serve somebody else, invite them to do a good thing together and delight. Well, thanks for the conversation. Thank you. Let's be apostles of friendship,

good conversation, and the rosary. Share this with others.
