- Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor, Johnston.

President Trump has fired Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Nome.

Trump says he's planning to replace her with Senator Mark Wayne Mullins.

The Oklahoma Republicans spoke to reporters outside of the Capitol shortly after the announcement was made today. - I am super excited about this opportunity. It came at an out-of-complete surprise, but it came at a little bit of a surprise force. And so the President, as you guys know, are great friends, and we get along great. I look forward to working with him in his cabinet.

Of course, we still got to do this little thing called confirmation. - Nome is face-growing criticism after contentious, congressional hearings over immigration enforcement and department leadership.

House Democratic leader, Hakim Jeffrey says removing Nome is a step toward fixing what he calls a broken department.

- They had a corrupt political hack who was running DHS, shame on every Republican senator, who put her in that position when they knew she was unqualified.

- Senator Mullin will take over as acting Homeland Security Secretary on March 31.

Defense Secretary Pete Heggsett says the war against Iran is intensifying, speaking from the Pentagon tonight, Heggsett said the United States and Israel still have a significant military force ready to deploy in the conflict. - If you think you've seen something, just wait, the amount of combat power that's still flowing, that's still coming, that we'll be able to project over Iran, is a multiples of what it currently is right now. When you add up our capabilities and those of these really defense forces.

- President Trump once again called on Iranian regime members to lay down their arms and exchange for immunity,

saying the U.S. is successfully destroying the country's military capabilities. Trump also told several news outlets that he should play a direct role in choosing the next leader of Iran. House re-publican leaders are calling on Texas representative Tony Gonzalez to drop his bid for reelection. This after the House Ethics Committee announced it was investigating him for alleged misconduct. Texas Public Radio's David Martin Davies reports.

- In a joint letter, House Speaker Mike Johnson and the Chambers Republican leadership ask Gonzalez to end his primary runoff bid. This comes today after Gonzalez admitted to having an affair with an aid, a violation of House rules. The aid, Regina Santasaviles later took her own life. Here's Gonzalez on the Joe Pag show. - I made a mistake, and I had a lapse in judgment, and I take full responsibility for those actions.

- The House leadership is not calling for Gonzalez to resign his seat. Gonzalez faces gun rights influencer Brandon Adetta in the runoff for the Republican primary for the Texas 23rd congressional district. For NPR News, I'm David Martin Davies and San Antonio. - You're listening to NPR News from Washington. About two dozen states are challenging new global tariffs imposed by President Trump.

The state's filed a lawsuit today over import taxes announced after the administration suffered a set back at the Supreme Court. Democratic attorneys general leading the case argue the president is exceeding his authority with planned 15% tariffs on goods from much of the world. Trump says the tariffs are necessary to reduce trade deficits. - A digital tool that helps guide doctors and nurses through a diagnosis could help address growing antibiotic resistance. NPR's Jonathan Lambert reports on a tool that cut prescriptions threefold in rewarding clinics without compromising care.

- In many rural clinics in Rwanda, nurses can see up to 60 some patients a day. Victor Pesafi Guando to goch is a physician from Rwanda. He says that leaves nurses little time for diagnosis.

That's why sometimes you'll find them giving a high number of antibodies just in case.

- He was part of a study that found about 70% of pediatric visits there end with an antibiotic prescription. That's likely much higher than necessary and contributes to antibiotic resistance. But a digital tool that guides clinicians step by step through the diagnosis and treatment cut antibiotic prescriptions to just 25% of visits. That drop didn't seem to impact patient outcomes.

The research was published in the journal "Plus Medicine," Jonathan Lambert and PR News. - Stocks closed sharply lower on Wall Street today, the Dow was down 784 points.
