Iran says it will close the straight of Hormuz indefinitely, if President Trump follows
“through on his threat to obliterate Iran's power plants if it does not let ships go through”
the straight. And it appears Emily Fang reports. Iran is blocking motion ships from transiting the straight of Hormuz, and that's caused the price of oil and gas to increase sharply this month. Trump wrote on social media on Saturday that the U.S. would quote "hit and obliterate
Iranian power plants if the straight was not open within 48 hours." Iran's President Masood Pizashki and wrote on social media site X shortly after that the straight was open for, quote, "all except those who violate or soil." A spokesperson for Iran's armed forces went even further, saying quote "nothing can stop us from destroying all American infrastructure in the Middle East region, should Trump
make good and his threat, and that the straight of Hormuz would remain totally closed until Iran could rebuild its power plants if the U.S. hit them." Emily Fang and Pernu's fan Turkey President Trump says he'll restore order to the nation's airports, long lines of airport security checkpoints this weekend, have left many travelers frustrated.
“The problems are being caused by the partial government shutdown, which is left TSA workers”
without pay for five weeks. Empires Luke Garrett has more. On Sunday morning, Trump posted on social media that ICE agents will go to U.S. airports to help transportation security administration workers, TSA workers. Trump then blamed Democrats for the shutdown, which the White House says caused TSA staffing
shortages and those long lines. But House Minority Leader Hockeyam Jeffries threw blame back at Trump criticizing this planned ICE deployment at airports. Trump said White House borders our Tom Homan is in charge of the ICE deployment to these airports.
And it's worth noting here, both TSA and ICE are part of DHS, but the two agencies have very different missions and training. That's Empires Luke Garrett. The Union representing TSA workers say it's opposed to the ICE deployment, saying ICE agents don't have the proper training.
“The worst flooding in 20 years continues to damage communities across Hawaii.”
As Hawaii Public Radio's Ashley Mezzuel reports, hundreds of people have been rescued from rising waters, but so far, no deaths have been reported. Most of the state remains on flood watch. The evacuation orders on Oahu have been lifted, but officials continue to warn some residents on Maui to prepare to leave impacted areas.
The flooding has blocked roads, destroyed homes, and damaged a hospital on Maui, forcing the relocation of nearly 100 patients. Boyle water orders are an effect for some areas, and health officials are warning people to keep out of the ocean in areas with significant storm runoff. In the parts of the state where the rain has stopped, search and rescue teams are moving in.
About 200 national guard members have been activated, and the army has put more than 100 soldiers on standby. For NPR News, I'm Ashley Mezzuel, in Honolulu. And you're listening to NPR News. A natural gas explosion in Istanbul's Sunday destroyed two buildings, officials say one person
was killed and ten others were injured.
The Istanbul Governor's office says one person remains in critical condition the cause of
the blast has not been released. An indigenous sovereign nation in Washington state will formally be a part of the twenty-twenty-six FIFA men's world cup from Northwest Public Broadcasting, Lauren Gallup, as our reports. The Piwala tribe of Indians in Washington state will be hosting events for fans during the games.
James Rideout is a tribal council member. The way I express this to our membership is that this is innovative. This is the first of its kind. You have an indigenous community that's supporting FIFA soccer. How incredible is that?
The Piwala tribe's reservation is about thirty miles south of Seattle, where some of the world cup games will be played. Along with viewing parties, there will be traditional dance, song, and drumming during a powwow and stick games meant to showcase the heritage of the tribe. Activities on Piwala planned begin on June 12th with a community parade.
