Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Core of a Coleman.

Today in Washington officials from Lebanon and Israel are holding direct diplomatic talks

for the first time in more than 30 years.

This is a possible first step in the conflict between Israel and Iranian-backed Hezbollah

militants. That broke out again after the U.S. and Israel launched a war against Iran in February. And Pierre's cap-launstorfe has more from Beirut. The Lebanese government has been asking for these talks for weeks, and Israel didn't take them up on it until last week, after the U.S. agreed to cease fire with Iran.

Hezbollah has urged the Lebanese government to cancel the talks. Meanwhile, people in Lebanon tell NPR they're exhausted by the war, but are skeptical that peace with Israel is possible. Israel won't agree to any deal unless there's a tangible plan with the Lebanese government for disarming Hezbollah, a long-standing Israeli demand.

But Hezbollah has rearmed regardless, firing near constant rockets into northern Israel during this war.

If talks dissolve, Israel says it's prepared to remain occupying southern Lebanon for

many months, even years. Katlan Strath and Pierre News, Beirut. One of the partially functioning hospitals in Gaza says a main generator has shut down. Officials say they cannot get spare parts. And Pierre's A.A. Betrulli reports on Israeli aid restrictions six months into the cease

fire in Gaza. Doctors who volunteered at Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza in recent weeks say patience are dying. Only from continued attacks, but also because basics aren't available. The most urgent thing is to get the medications in.

This is the number one priority for everybody and the rebuilding of the hospitals. That's Dr. Ashraf Abu Dahliz from Indiana, who, like other doctors, told NPR that visiting

physicians are prevented by Israel from bringing in their own supplies and medicines.

Israel also continues to block the entry of generators, solar panels, and engine oils. They classifies these as dual-use items it says Hamas can exploit. Israel says humanitarian needs are being met in Gaza with hundreds of trucks entering daily. Aid groups say a fraction of what's needed is entering.

A.A. Betrulli and Pierre News, Dubai. Two members of Congress say they will step down over allegations of sexual misconduct. Texas Republican Congressman Tony Gonzalez and California Democratic Congressman Eric Swallwell say they will leave the house although exactly when is not clear. Swallwell has strongly denied the accusations. However, he has also dropped his campaign for California Governor.

Virginia Democratic Congressman Suha's supermanium serves on the House Ethics Committee.

I'm always an advocate of holding Congress and members of Congress accountable and making

sure they're subject to the same laws as the American people and they should certainly hold themselves. We should hold ourselves to a higher standard too because we're supposed to be an example. We're supposed to be the people that were sent to Washington to represent people. He spoke to NPR's morning edition. This is NPR.

The Pentagon says it conducted another strike on an alleged drug boat yesterday in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Officials say two alleged drug traffickers were killed. No evidence of their link to drug trafficking has been provided. The U.S. has killed at least 170 people in similar strikes since last September. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, class of 2026, includes 10 people who spent their careers as producers, early influencers, and even on a hugely

popular TV show. From Member Station WKSU, Kabir Bhatya, has more. Ladies and gentlemen, the Beatles. Ed Sullivan, Sunday night variety show hosted everyone from the Fab 4 to Elvis, and the Supremes to Stevie Wonder. All of those acts are in the Rock Hall and this year, Sullivan will be inducted to. He's joined by four of the most successful producers of the 70s and 80s. Linda Creed, a Reef Margin, Jimmy Miller, and Rick

Rubin. And in the early influence category, five people will be inducted this November in Los Angeles. Country Rocker, Graham Parsons, Hip Hop Pioneers, MC Light, and Queen Latifa, Latin music legend, Celia Cruz, and Afrobeat activist, Felicuti. For NPR News, I'm Kabir Bhatya, and Cleveland. The Los Angeles Unified School District has reached a tentative

contract agreement with its third and last union. The tentative deal has averted a strike

that could have started this morning. The agreement is with the union that represents tens of thousands of support staff, including custodians, cafeteria workers, and bus drivers. This is NPR.
