Live from NPR news in Washington, I'm Ryland Barton.

The man being held in connection with the shooting at the White House Correspondent

Center over the weekend made his first appearance in federal court since its arrest today.

31-year-old Cole Allen faces three felony charges including trying to assassinate President Trump. Before the incident he allegedly sent a letter to his parents and employer as NPR's Ryan Lucas explains. In that document, Allen apologizes to his parents, his colleagues and others.

He says he's a U.S. citizen. He says what his elected representatives do reflects on him and he writes that he's "no longer willing to permit a pedophile rapist and trader" and "to in essence implicate Allen in his crimes." That appears to be a reference to President Trump.

Allen also makes clear who his targets are and that would be administration officials from the highest ranking to the lowest. NPR's Ryan Lucas reporting.

First Lady Melania Trump is criticizing late night comedian Jimmy Kimmel for a joke he made

about her as NPR's Montelietal Barco reports President Trump is again calling for Kimmel to be fired.

Jimmy Kimmel made his jab during a sketch on his late night show last week.

A mock speech for an alternative White House Correspondent's dinner. Our first lady Melania is here. Look at me. So beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.

While a sketch ran two days before the real White House Correspondent's dinner, when an alleged would be a assassin tried to storm the ballroom. In a post on ex Melania Trump called Kimmel's joke about her hateful and violent, and she asked network ABC, which airs his show to take a stand. The president then called for ABC and parent company Disney to immediately fire him.

In September, the network did briefly suspend Kimmel's show after he commented on the MAGA response to the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, Mandalietal Barco and PR news. The U.S. Supreme Court has thrown out a lower court ruling that found Texas's new congressional map likely discriminates against voters of color as NPR's Han Solo Wong reports

the court has already allowed the map to be used for this year's midterm elections. President Trump pushed Republican state lawmakers in Texas to pass this map of congressional voting districts to help the GOP keep control of the House of Representatives. Last year, a three judge panel found that the map likely violates the Constitution by discriminating against voters based on their race, and it's because top Republican lawmakers

publicly suggested they pass the map to get rid of districts where black and Latino voters together make up the majority. Now the Supreme Court has reversed that ruling, the court's three liberal justices dissented. The congressional gerrymandering fight that began in Texas continues in other states. Florida's governor is proposing a new Republican friendly map, and Virginia's highest court

is hearing a case that will help determine whether a new Democratic friendly map voters approve can be used on Zilawang and PR news. The U.S. stopped markets record breaking rally slowed today after uncertainty rose about what will happen next in the Iran war. This is NPR news from Washington.

The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the racketeering conviction of former Ohio Republican

House Speaker Larry Householder in a $60 million bribery scheme.

Householder is serving 20 years in prison after he was convicted of mastermindening a scheme funded by electric utility first energy corp to secure the speakership and pass a $1 billion bailout for a nuclear plan. South Carolina public health officials have declared an end to the largest measles outbreak

in the U.S. since 1991, officials say an increase in vaccinations was key in stopping

the spread as NPR's Maria Goodoy reports. The state has reported no new cases in 42 days. The outbreak began last fall over six-month period, nearly a thousand people were infected with measles. Most of them were unvaccinated children.

The virus can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia and brain swelling. In a briefing Monday, Dr. Brandon Traxler of the South Carolina Department of Public Health said, "A push for vaccination helped quail the surge." "It was, you know, a times, lung and life threatening or potentially long lasting for others." While South Carolina's outbreak is over for now, more than 20 other new outbreaks have

been reported this year across the U.S. That includes outbreaks in Texas, Florida, and Utah, each with more than a hundred cases of measles. Maria Goodoy and PR news. A team of a 100 Italian chefs assembled the world's largest Tiramisu in London.

The 1,445-foot dessert contained about 2.2 tons of Mariscapone cheese, 50,000 Ladyfinger cookies and more than 3,000 eggs. This is NPR News from Washington. Every day NPR reports stories that keep you informed without fear or favor. That's the promise of a free press in a democracy.
