prices has pushed inflation to its highest level in more than three years.

"Consumer prices in May were up 4.2% from a year ago, that's the biggest annual increase since April of 2023. Prices rose by half a percent between April and May with energy costs accounting from more than 60% of that monthly increase, stripping out volatile food and energy cost, so called core inflation was 2.9% for the 12th month sending in May, a slightly larger annual
increase than the previous month." Gasoline prices have moderated in recent days, but are still about $1.17 a gallon higher than they were before the US and Israel launched their war on Iran. Iran says it targeted U.S. military bases in Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain today, in response to American air strikes in Iran. The strikes followed the downing of the U.S. military helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz, as NPR's Jane Araf reports.

The U.S. military has a major presence in a Jordanian air base in the desert there. And said shrapnel from the interceptions caused no damage or casualties. Iran said it destroyed U.S. fighter jet hangers in the command and control center at the base. The U.S. military did not comment.
Iran also targeted a U.S. air base in Kuwait, and in Bahrain, where the U.S. fifth fleet is based, siren sounded while the government urged residents to seek shelter. Jane Araf and PR news, Bay Route." President Trump wrote online this morning that Iran has taken too long to negotiate a deal, and, quote, "now they will have to pay the price."
It's not clear what this means.
In a second, posting Trump praised the U.S. military blockade on Iranian ports, and claimed
lots of oil is getting through the Strait. Oil traffic has been nearly shut down, since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February 28.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is scheduled to testify today to the House oversight committee behind closed doors that Republican-led panel wants to question him about his relationship with late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Democrats say they want to ask Gates about whether he knew anything about Epstein's crimes. Gates has denied seeing or participating in any of Epstein's crimes.
The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new sunscreen ingredient for the first time
in decades. In the United States, sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug, not as a cosmetic. It appears Sydney Lupkin reports that can make new approvals tricky. "Bemmoatries in all has long been an active ingredient in sunscreen sold in Europe and Asia. And for the last 20 years, a company called DSM Nutritional Products LLC has been trying
to get it approved in the U.S. The FDA announced this week that it added Bemmoatries in all to the list of permitted sunscreen ingredients. The new ingredient protects against UVA and UVB-rays, the agency says, and it's safe to use for adults and children's six months and older.
