Live from the NPR News in Washington, I'm Kristen Wright.
The U.S. and Iran are saying opposite things about whether Iran has agreed to allow
“UN inspections of its damaged nuclear sites.”
According to Iran's foreign ministry, there are no such plans. Vice President Vance though has said there are. President Trump addressed the issue while speaking to reporters in Pennsylvania this afternoon. "They're wrong. They know they're wrong. They told us inside. And we have it down. A hundred percent inspections. And if they were right, I can't sell the meetings right now."
He's referring to negotiators meeting in Geneva to discuss the terms of the tentative deal to end the war. Trump says international atomic energy agency inspectors will be on the ground at quote the appropriate time. President Trump says six people have been arrested for vandalizing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
“An iconic DC landmark. He posted on truth social this afternoon that there's a 350 foot gash in the lining,”
but hasn't shared any evidence. And the newly painted bottom has already started peeling. There are election primaries and run-offs today in four states, Maryland, New York, South Carolina and Utah. NPR Sage Miller says voters in Utah will be choosing from several candidates for a newly redrawn congressional seat.
For the first time in modern history, Utah has a safe democratic congressional seat that could help determine the makeup of the house majority come November.
It's also one of the most competitive democratic primary races Utah has ever seen. The top three candidates range from moderate to progressive to aligning with the democratic socialists. Damon Canne is a political science professor at Utah State University. He believes this race lays out the choice facing Democrats across the country. Do voters want a party that will stand its ground on policy, even if that policy won't go anywhere quickly,
“or a party that aims for collaboration, even if that means compromise. Sage Miller and PR News Salt Lake City.”
The Israeli military has been using concrete to seal what they say are hummus tunnels and areas of Gaza under its control. But as NPR's Anaspada reports, when liquid concrete suddenly flooded the streets, it was an unexpected chance for Palestinians to get their hands on building material. Palestinians have been re-sing into the streets since Monday, carrying buckets and shovels to scoop up the still liquid concrete as it floods the neighborhood. Children and others are waiting through the thick gray sludge, carrying away buckets of it before it halves.
Israeli military says it pondered into a tunnel Monday in eastern Gaza. Israel has bought cement and most other construction materials from entering the devastated Gaza strip throughout the world. Residents say they hope to use it to repair some homes damaged during the war. Anaspada reporting, this is NPR News in Washington. Federal investigators say structural failure due to poor construction is what caused the deadly partial collapse of a condo building in South Florida nearly five years ago. The beach front
collapse occurred just after one in the morning, local time and left 98 people dead as NPR's Debe Elliott reports. The 12th story, Champlain Tower's South condo partially collapsed on June 24th, 2021. New technical findings by the National Institute of Standards and Technology conclude the problem started about three weeks before the collapse. When two connections between garage columns and the
pool deck failed, Judith Metroni Ryzer co-leads the federal investigation. Once the first connection failed,
other elements of the pool deck were left to carry their loads. But they were not strong enough to handle them due to problems that stemmed from the original design and construction of the building. Investigators will issue a final report later to include recommendations to improve building safety, Debe Elliott and PR News. A plan to make the cost of buying a home more affordable is moving through Congress. The house will take up the bill next after the Senate passed it yesterday.
Democrats and Republicans largely agree on this one. lawmakers say the legislation would increase housing supply by limiting what investors can buy up. The goal is to bring down the cost of buying a home for Americans. The NBA draft starts tonight. The Washington Wizards have the first overall pick. I'm Kristen Wright and PR News in Washington.
