John Lewis reports the company is accused of intentionally making its products addictive for children. The case pits attorneys general from California,
Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey against Mehta. The states alleged that Mehta sought to hook minors on its social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, and wanted to keep them on for longer with features like infinite scroll and like counts. Social media platforms have typically had immunity from prosecution over the content that users post, so experts say the states are trying to sidestep that by going after product design features. They alleged that
Mehta knew its products were addictive and harmful and hit it. The states also alleged that Mehta violated a law designed to protect children online. The case is part of a wave of suits over the effects of social media on young people. It's said to get underway next week, Mehta has denied the allegations. John Lewis and P.R. News.
