U.S. forces have destroyed five Iranian oil ships, as part of escalating hostilities in the Gulf.
“The U.S. says the operation was in response to Iran targeting U.S. warships.”
And Piers of Greg Mayary has more. U.S. Central Command says it hit and destroyed the five Iranian oil ships near Carguilin, the country's main oil processing facility at the northern end of the Gulf. The Americans told the crews on the Iranian ships to abandon them before they were struck.
The U.S. says it acted after Iran's revolutionary guard corps fired ballistic missiles
at U.S. Navy warships twice in the past two days. The American ships were not hit and continue to operate in the region. The U.S. is stepping up economic pressure on Iran and exchanges of fire have increased in recent days. The U.S. also hit 3 Iranian oil ships last Saturday.

A new report by the University of Illinois, Chicago, used anonymous GPS data from cell phones to unpack the economic toll of ice operations in 2025 throughout Chicago. The study tracked movements between immigrant neighborhoods and non-immigrant neighborhoods in Chicago's Cook County. The report estimates that rates cost retail and restaurants and non-immigrant neighborhoods
about $1.26 billion and it costs the state around $107 million in tax revenue.

Chinese counterparts are distilling their best capabilities in threatening U.S. technological leadership and Piers of John Rooch has more. National Security Agency, Cyber Security and Infrastructure Security Agency, and FBI say Chinese AI companies likely with the awareness of the Chinese government have been extracting massive amounts of data from American AI models through a process called distillation.
It says they do it through a range of pathways that violate U.S. AI companies' terms of use. The result is that Chinese AI companies save money and time building AI that way gaining an edge in the AI competition. The agencies warn that what they call this, quote, "systematic extraction of proprietary
functionalities and capabilities threatens U.S. technological leadership." And the agencies recommend U.S. companies take steps to detect and mitigate the distillation. Chinese President Xi Jinping is due to visit the United States this month and AI is expected to be on the agenda. John Rooch NPR News.
