five varies i appreciate that that's awesome yeah i really i give you the paddock or the twin spires or something but uh we're kind of busy in the trailer and stuff and so i just jumped out to the parking lot and hopefully i don't get run over by golf cart or something like that although that would be good uh TV so to speak yeah i hope it doesn't happen but if it does we will try to monetize that yeah and so I'm trying to clip for it we we love seeing this time of

year it's one of the best things that we do we look forward to all the time um and you have one us money and you've one of the listeners money in the past so uh very excited to to see what you have in store um do you want to just get started with the talk about maybe the oaks on Friday and then we can get into the the story lines at the Derby because like i if you if you bet Randy's picks on the Derby historically you know hit or miss you've hit stuff you've won some force you've

“lost them but with the oaks i think you're up big over the course of part of my take”

don't even love bar stool we're gonna we're gonna go up bigger this year yeah so so if we're

gonna talk about the oaks first uh do you agree with Dave's horse lovely griping in there i'm

excited for Dave it's an unbelievable moment for him this is why he you know starts owning horses do you think his horse has any chance any horse and any big race pretty much has a chance i mean look at rich i'm not i'm not putting lovely gray in a category of rich strike she's better than that but look at rich strike and look at mine that bird you know and she has runs and really solid races it's her toy park on synthetic she can make the transition to dirt she's in with a shot

and i'm happy for Dave he had to be on pins and needles weight on a couple of scratches and he got in uh good for him it's really cool yeah and you know i i mean there were some people who are like

all you can't run this horse because she's she's never been on dirt like if you get the opportunity

“to be in the oaks you have to be in the oaks and let's put the whole synthetic the dirt thing is not”

really you know as big of a deal as some people make it out to be and the plan right now tell Dave he may already know but NBC wants to interview him and the walkover yeah from the paddock to the track so i'll see he does he does know we just need to be John phanta we need to be phanta uh because phanta is the best i think i heard a reports of phanta's gonna be the infield i hope phanta i know that i know there's more of a uh pre-kness thing but i wouldn't mind seeing phanta on top of

some porta pot he's getting beers chucked at his head that would be a video full of time this will be phanta's Kentucky Derby day view and we're all really looking forward to it but it can't be hit the pre-kness guys because there's not going to be an infield at the pre-kness this year yes that's fine we're still got just a million to you know the Belmont is still at Sarah Toga they're going to get yourself to hear that out yeah this is the weirdest triple crown in history yes maybe we can

get phanta in a big hat now be cool too all right all right so who do you have uh in the oaks all right i really like a horse that didn't exact uh horse that's a 10 to one right now in the program line i don't think you'll get 10 to one six to one probably's more realistic and her name

is always a runner she's trained by Chad Brown she won a race in New York and her last start

uh look really good visually she's only had two races in her life kind of like emerging market

“her chance running in the Kentucky Derby and i think always a runner has a great chance to win and”

the other part of the exact uh would be a fully named prom queen who is uh trained by Brad Cox and uh she also comes up and went and floor it up and look pretty good so they're not the favorites one of them's eight to one prom queen right now in the program one of them's 10 to one always a runner but i really like that exact uh and always runner in particular i think she's been a runner big race okay okay great so and now now for the derby this is i'm i'm very excited for this derby

it's tell me if i'm wrong but it feels very wide open we have four horses that are uh you know between four and six to one right now it feels like one of those derby's that we can maybe get a long shot uh what what what is the vibe going into this Kentucky Derby Saturday and do you agree that it is extremely wide open in terms of the field oh you're all over it the vibe is exactly as you described it from the handicapers even the owners and the trainers and the jockies feel the

same way that this is we you know it's almost to cliche and some people think it's a cop out when i say from almost on an annual basis the derby's wide open because it typically is wide open this is even

figure you know right there together just a hair is breath apart in the analytics and it's going

“to be an interesting race yeah yeah so we do see a lot of a lot of group again we were talking”

about one on on Monday's show further ado because there's a an NFL tie in with that i guess one of the horses owners uh went to the hospital after laughing so hard at a young way kookic that he had a seizure goes to the hospital gets a brain scan they find a benign tumor have that removed and now he's healthy and and he's good to go um it's an interesting story that's one of the horses we were talking about what would you say about him oh he's got a hell of a

shot to win you know at the he had the most impressive of the triple crown of the Kentucky Derby prep races when he won the bluegrass sticks by 11 lengths but just to show you how evenly match this is i mean i read or tease the jockey was on him in the bluegrass and when you win the bluegrass six by 11 lengths and you run the top speed figure of any horse in the race i mean most

shot these to be like just so excited they be on cloud nine and i read's never won the Kentucky Derby

amazingly so what does he do he takes off a further ado chooses not to write him and he's writing Renegade the Arkansas Derby winner instead it's just a perfect example of how wide open this race is all right so let's talk about Renegade because Renegade has uh it's our good friend micro polis horse Renegade also has a cracked hoof how painful how big of a deal is this is this like the turf toe do we actually have to be worried about it uh what what what what what actually happens with the

cracked hoof for a horse that is one of the favorites to win the Kentucky Derby usually you don't really have to be worried about it at all it's it's not an uncommon thing with race horses and so what happens what happens with Renegade what happened to you know just the last couple of days there is a guy who's like the guru of situations like this a fairier a horseshoe guy okay name is he is name is Ian McKinley and so they fly in Ian McKinley and what they do is

they take sort of like piano wire okay and they run it through the crack and they pull the crack together and tighten it to where it's there's no crack anymore it's just a little hairline and then they put in acrylic patch over it to completely protect it and the horses find the horse doesn't feel it the horse doesn't experience any discomfort or anything like that and then horses

“run in in situations like that all the time remember big brown yeah he wanted to tuck you”

Derby with it this is like the Alabama ankle surgery it's yeah it's it's very very common place

in third bed racing go to a paddock in big races and look at their hooves and you see patches

regularly it's not that big of a deal all right so not a big deal with the crack tough that's good to know what about the the one the one position the post position like that that's renegade what has been 40 years somewhat since a horse is one the Kentucky Derby from that position on the rail so are we making is that is that noise or is that hey that's a real thing hey it's mostly noise but and so so here's the deal okay if you break for the number one post position

there is a higher percentage chance that you can encounter traffic and that will affect your horse

“negatively okay and that's what people focus on they see horses the break from the number one post”

that occasionally you know get wiped out when all the horses on the outside drop over on top of them and they think oh my god this is terrible the one horse the one all is horrible but there's also the fact that there's geometry in ball and your closer to the rail you're running a shorter distance than the other horses and if you think that doesn't matter just look at Calvin Burrell's three

Kentucky Derby wins when he never got he when he was on top of the rail so close that is his black

boot had quite paint on it from scraping up against the rail it's very important to save ground in the Kentucky Derby so it's a wash right he just got he just got through a void the wipe out part of it right and and the reason why no horses won from the one hole since 1986 the average odds of the horses breaking from the number one post position average is 31 to one none of them were expected to win so it's not really it's sort of a statistical anomaly

and if you really like Renegade then I wouldn't let that bother you a whole lot yeah because

like three times in the last I don't know 15 years or something like that where it's like that doesn't

“also that that really doesn't make it the fifth position isn't somehow better than everyone else is”

no and the seventeen holes never want the Kentucky Derby which is bizarre but it's just a statistical anomaly

you know the thing about the thing about post positions it's a you know like Bob Baffer back when you could pick the post positions there were a few years there were the trainers could pick their own posts right it was a draw random draw and they got to choose their posts and statistically there was a particular post that Bob Baffer really wanted resource one of the favorites and he took that post position he was all happy about it so what happens the horses leave

the starting gate and the horses on either side of Baffer's converge on top of them and Sandwich and then the horse goes out the back end and what looked like the best post position ends up being

“the worst post position so you don't really know it's it's kind of a crap shoot yeah there's one”

horse in in the race that's interesting to say the least so happy so happy a lot of interesting storylines behind that one but what I'm looking at is the age of the jockey nice Smith he's 60 right he's a 60 year old man that is going to be a jockey and the Kentucky Derby is he I guess my main

question is does he still have it at 60 and then the second would be like what what skills start why

don't we see this more often what skills deteriorate that make a make jockey a younger man's game okay if if Michael listens to this the first thing he's going to want me to say is that he's 59 and not 60 here's here's why you think he's 60 because the bio information says that he's 60 but in order to ride when he was a kid he had to be 16 to ride he'd ride about his age oh so that's getting one the other end yeah yeah yeah so the official date right is it says 60 but he's

actually 59 and it'll turn 60 later this year and obviously the between 59 and 60 is not much he's still an old guy it'll be the oldest guy ever to ride in the Kentucky Derby at age 59

he would definitely be the oldest guy to win it uh Bill Schumaker won it from the number one post

40 years ago there he was certain then when he was 54 years old Mike Smith is a freaking medical marble um he works out harder than probably anybody you know he is a workout warrior and he's in better shape at age 59 then 90% of the kids he's riding against that might be you know 30 28 32 so don't let the age for Mike Smith the body you at all but it is a fantastic story line in Bob with the horse definitely yeah 59 that is important distinction they're they're doing

him dirty on that one yeah big time big time Randy I want you to explain um you know I watch horse racing I've been on horse racing throughout the year so it's a two-part question one can you explain to people the Kentucky Derby process of getting horses in and two my real question is similar to when we're watching football it used to be the SEC now it's the big 10 where it's like hey big 10 league plays better than the SEC that's they're gonna rain supreme when we get to the

postseason would it be fair to say the Florida Derby this year was that much better than everyone else

“and those three horses which I watched that race and it was incredible don't three horses you should”

look at him be like hey this is a cream of the crop this is the big 10 winning three national championships in a row that's where the winner's gonna come from not you know California Arkansas or Kentucky you think that's totally fair I completely fair but there's there's a subtle difference and college football it's a good football and college basketball it's typically going to be either the big 10 or the SEC right you might get the ACC that might sneak in there you know

if if claims can be rehabilitated or something like that right but normally it's those two big conferences and the horse racing it can be the Florida Derby one year it can be the Arkansas Derby the next year it can be the Santa need a Derby it can be the bluegrass stakes maybe this year with further ado but wouldn't memorials no good anymore but it can kind of in be cyclical right this year yes but Florida Derby looks like sort of the cream of the crop in my opinion normally

you can see three horses hit the wire together okay what's the odds that all three horses are going to be really good compared to all three horses begin just kind of mediocre and that of him were good enough to run away from the field that that's typically what you get when you see what they

I think the numbers show that all three of those horses are really something yeah okay yeah and so the three horses are the Puma chief while being commandment can you rank them and maybe break those three down because though all three of those are very much in play to win the Derby and all three of them could very easily win the Derby and I can I can give you my opinion and I'm not extremely confident about it but the horse that I picked to win the Kentucky Derby's chief Lollipy oh

he can win the big one though Randy every time who was third he was third in the Florida Derby and he was beaten by commandment the wire in the proud of you so you're right he is not yet one the big one

“but here's the thing about chief Lollipy right first of all he's got Bill Mott in his corner of”

the trainer who's three quarters horse he won the Kentucky Derby last year he won the Kentucky Derby last year with sovereignty if he's not the best trainer in America he's on a very very very

short list but it's it's horse more than trainer it always is this horse was a million dollar horse

wild everybody with workouts before the horse ever ran a race okay and when Mott watch the Florida Derby and the horse was riding between fighting down the stretch and then kind of you know back down just a little bit at the finish and lines of finish and close third first thing Mott said is like most of the wire to himself I'm putting blinkers on this horse the next time he runs the hood that restricts their vision he saw that he thought the horse was unfocused and was

looking at the horses on either side of them more than he was paying attention or what he was doing

“and it was a sign of inexperience so he said if I can get him the Kentucky Derby which he did”

obviously I'm I'm gonna run him in blinkers which is uncommon for Mott in a big race to make a change like that since the horse has had the blinkers on a Churchill downs he has looked like an improved horse he's training even better than he trained before which is marginal because he trained great to begin with but he's really really looking like he's he's sitting on a big big race other trainers have said the same thing the competition you know and cheap wallet

be really really what's good so all he's got to do is improve a little bit it's not like he has to make this big transformation yeah right now in the early way during he's 13 to one yeah so to me I thought that was a pretty good risk to take I want like like I said it would

you go watch to Florida Derby because it was a incredible race I just he didn't he didn't have

“the I didn't like what I saw out of it but maybe the blinkers I get it no I get it if it worked”

if it weren't for the blinkers I wouldn't be kicking okay it's a moment was there and he just kind of didn't the you know the Roman commandment were unbelievable and he just was like nah I'm not gonna try to win this you're wrong is there is such a thing as a sports psychologist for a horse like do you trainers work with them on the on the mental game yeah sports the sports psychologist is they build my yeah yeah it bought baffered I mean you got to be you got to be half

horse psychologists to be a horse man that that's part of the game because making horses happy equals if they have talent equals making horses successful yeah and unhappy horse just won't put up yeah yeah so they're constantly they're constantly trying to figure out you know what is this horse one why is this horse acting weird you know why does he look unhappy what can I do to make him happy other than you know feed him more which doesn't work so yeah that's that's part of the

game happy horse happy life yeah so ready it's been a while since we've done a question like this but we have a new addition to part of my take and he's in the booth over here his name Zach

he's a first round pick he's a superstar but with you a rookie guy like that sometimes you

make some rookie mistakes and that's okay we roll with them Zach saw that we had you on the show this morning and so he prepared some questions but he might I'm here that he might not have prepared questions for the correct Randy Moss that's happened before okay good Zach look hey Randy how are you doing to him man good I die I only play when I want to play by the way I was I was curious is a horse-shocking is that like a family Lenny it's not that I know she's

prepared hey Randy it's gone on I was I was curious if there was ever a catch in your career that made that you came down with and you were just like I had no business catching this ball and you got to the ground and it was just in your hands now there was a tackle in my career when I was in the sixth grade and a guy was running back a kick for a touchdown in the championship game and I made the tackle and saved the game and that's the only football I light of my life a little done right

guys a lot of guys on the field just couldn't compete with your speed having that kind of speed

“is that did that transcend the football field where else did you find yourself using that speed”

I wrote there's not many guys that can run a 5/8-40 but they you know that can keep up with my with my 5/8 but yeah that's that's been a hallmark hallmark of my career here at NBC is using that 5/8 speed to escape the I rate better that that's some of my picks that didn't pan out so well yeah good question yes and Zachany last question I love that for you Randy thank you for your time yeah you go right now you can ask a horse racing question I was curious though do we see

a lot of like a lot of lineage in the in the horse shocking like do our sons joking when their

father's did is like a pass-down thing because they fit that that small build archetype or is that

not the case now that you do get that periodically there are look there are some guys like Tyler Gaffley on is is a top-checking in America right now and his father is a jocky but that's a really good point yeah I mean you don't find many people anymore in America that are 5/105 pounds and you can be bred to be a jocky although you know what typically happens though and it just happens in all in all sports the the sons tend to be bigger than the fathers yeah so now we're

“seeing a lot of the jockies and that's why a lot of the jockies in America are coming from”

Latin American countries because that doesn't seem to be the case as much in Latin American countries isn't the United States but yeah there are there are lineage traits among jock and well all right just speaking of that it's good segue because this is another cool storyline that well I'm sure be discussed on the NBC broadcast everyone tune in to see Randy on Saturday and on Friday as well Bill Mott who you mentioned chief while being who's your pick his son has two horses in

the race as a trainer Riley Mott what I don't think I don't remember this happening because usually the you know a father and son duo would work together and have horses together but they have competing horses in the Kentucky Derby yep yep they do Riley has got a horse name and credit a bolt in another horse named Albus they're both going to be long shots but yeah he's just out he's just now getting his career started he's only been on his own for a few years and he

worked with his dad for quite a while so there's not a better guy to learn from and it's really uncommon to see a guy you know that young in his training career to get a horse one horse in the Kentucky Derby much less too but just like Jockeys right even more so really the Jockeys because there's not a size issue there when kids are raised around their fathers I even when daughters are raised around their fathers that it's really really common for them to decide

to go into the horse racing business themselves as trainers Mark Cassie who had a horse into Kentucky Derby until he got scratch silent tactic it's a norm worked for him for a long time and it's now a trainer on his own it was the famous combination way back in the day uh been Jones he right now is tied with Bob Bapper for the most Kentucky Derby when six I mean we're talking about how you met far back in the you know 40s and 50s and 60s his son Jimmy Jones

was a top top class trainer as well Brad Cox a trainer right now he's got a couple of sons in the business that are going to line up and training is on their own Todd Pletcher as a son that really really wants to be trained when he goes up when he's growing up but when he you know gets older straight yeah it's it happens a lot and you're going to see a lot more of it Wayne Lucas had a son there was involved in horse racing jepelucous that would have been a great trainer

or a not for an injury so it happens a lot in horse racing uh Randy looks beautiful there in Louisville

“um what is the what is the what is the perfect horse racing weather?”

full six horses night cool weather more than they like hot weather they are not hot weather animals so the perfect thing for a race horse would probably be i'd say upper 40s lower 50s okay if you if you get in the summer and you're in a race track and it's hot and the horse you can slide you know they don't like it and then all of a sudden the fall turns and you get this one

morning this first morning when it's like you know 46 degrees outside the horses go freaking berserk

they're they're like a rangotans all over the place they are so happy that they're that they're

football weather it's gonna be the case yeah I saw it's gonna be the coolest uh Kentucky Derby in like 30 years or something it's gonna be like 60 degrees yeah for 56 degrees what the horses will absolutely love it okay so that's good fast weather and you gave us your pick for uh for the derby is there a long shot that that you think might be worth sprinkling some money on there was a long shot that I like and just got scratched this morning and we're named uh named full effort

if you want a horse to put in the bottom part of life your superfect isn't tri-fect is

a golden tempo horse to finish second in the Louisiana Derby is probably gonna be 30 to

one 25 30 to one he's a stretch rider he may be last going down the back stretch but we expect a pretty fast early pace and that's those are the long shots that really work well in the super and in the tribe are the horses that come along at the end and pick up the pieces and they're not fast enough to win but they're fast enough at a big price you know to keep a pretty nice payoff yeah okay Randy a couple last questions the first we have to ask this every single year

is this year the Japan wins a derby the answers no but we have to ask it it's like it's like when we we joke about a wild cat formation in football it's like oh well this maybe be a

runner or pass up it's a run again always so Japan's not gonna win but the Japanese horse does

you have any chance to maybe finish you know in the top three and you can make a case that either one of the two Japanese horses you know would have a chance to hit the board that's one derby and denon bourbon probably might be a little bit better than one derby but it's hard to say but look people who know the Japanese horses very well better than I do that you know seeing them over there have told me that either one of these horses are forever young who is the

Japanese horse that all one a couple of years ago so I you know I don't like either one of them

“honestly okay we check that box yeah maybe next year maybe next year it'll happen it'll happen”

within the next decade absolutely wow making it I like that proclamation yeah how can you say within the next decade just because we're due just because the horses that have been in the past they they should have won yeah forever young should have won yeah forever young was the best horse when he finished third beaten two noses by Mystic Dan and Sierra Leone Mystic Dan got through on the rail and got an incredibly fortunate trip it's the only reason he won Sierra Leone

was was bearing in on forever young the entire length of the stretch and if it weren't for the the ineptitude of the Churchill down stewards and the horse would have been Sierra Leone would have been disqualified and forever young would have been put up the second but he was the best horse that year and he came back and won the breeders cup classic right last year shipping over from Japan ready are you a Kentucky curdle I am not a Kentucky curdle wow so we should probably

they they've got more energy later on in the day goes I don't think that's the case but there are

you know trainers like to give their horses some experience under lights if they've never run

under lights before whether that's training in the early early morning when it's dark and the lights are on like they are a Churchill downs but you know horses in some cases if they've never seen it before it can throw them off a little bit so they like to kind of give them a preview make sense all right all right thank you Randy thanks for the best

okay I'll just just go check out the bar so I start wandering aimlessly to the bar and then Connor calls me over he's like hey man how's it going my name's Connor I'm an AWL is like nice to meet you he's like yeah I'm an indie guard driver too and so we start to talk and then he's like you want to just like have dinner with us absolutely. what's up yeah so he's a good friend of yours huh yeah I know he is we I was actually oddly enough just out last week at his house interviewing him for my podcast oddly enough so I'm excited to have kind of some conversations with him we're we're doing like a merch line together for the month of May for the indie 500 so he's got a clothing company now and we decided like all right he's going to come to the indie 500 for the first time ever with his dad which is which is really cool

for him and his family and yeah he's just a good dude and he obviously had great things I mean anyone who I've talked to about being on the show has only said good things so again not too much yeah yeah yeah can I ask question off of that what I'm dumb that's okay explained to me the

“difference between indie car and F1 because they look the same for sure no it's honestly the most”

common question for me the one is kind of what a lot of us tried to do and you always go for it

when you're when you're young and like I always say you've got the NFL the MLB the NBA they're all play but balls they're just done a little bit differently it's kind of the same in racing like Formula 1 is a world championship you're racing all over the world but there's only 22 jobs and in indie car there's 33 at the indie 500 and NASCAR you've got 3840 and so there's really not a ton of jobs when it comes to professional motorsport and Formula 1 they're spending $250 million

a year whereas like our budget's like $10 million dollars per car so we have a little bit more of a diverse schedule we've got super speedways like the Indianapolis 500 which we're doing 245 miles an hour and then we've got street courses and short ovals and F1 doesn't really have that they're just on road courses and street courses and we've got the Indy 500 which is obviously our Super Bowl and actually yeah it happens early on in the season oddly enough it's like race 7 but

it's the only form of motorsport where you get guys from F1 and from NASCAR who actually want to do that too because it is the crown jewel right so that's kind of it's a it's a it's a unique part about it and you've done F1 you've worked with F1 in terms of testing their cars form yeah so I was a test driver back when I I moved to Europe when I was 18 I graduated high school moved to Europe by myself it was it was tough I didn't get to do all the fun stuff and do all the

college things but but it was you know I had a goal in mind and yeah I did some F1 test driving for for the 4 senior team which is now awesome Martin and learned a lot over there I got to race over there and and yeah ended up back in Indy car which is again I'm an Indiana guy so maybe it was just

always meant to be yeah how realistic are the simulators you know what they've gotten pretty good

like they are the ones that you can't buy that the manufacturers are using and like the F1 teams are using they're pretty incredible and and you're like fully strapped in it's moving it's you know your head I've had my head connected to a neck G simulator so like you've got this giant arm attached to your helmet that like crew simulates G load for your for your head which is kind of wild you hope it doesn't rip it off but it's it's impressive what they can do to help because again

it's it's free to run a day on the simulator as like it could cost probably hundreds of thousand dollars for on the car on the track yeah I mean we had a simulator we had a couple simulators here that seemed like they were pretty expensive like state of the art simulators not what you guys are using but I would say they're very realistic because I would maybe get one lap before I crash every single time it's not as easy as it looks like I got to say it's not there's some guys who are just

really good at the simulator and then you get them on the track and they just can't handle it so there are actually I work out warriors yeah yeah similar but there are a lot of people who are very good and and sometimes it does translate like you obviously like a room of the grand terizmo movie there was a guy that like started playing grand terizmo and it up racing real cars like

“that has happened but I'll never forget one day like this is wait ten two thousand ten probably”

I or long time ago that it was very early on in the simulator was stuff and they tried to take like the best simulator racer and they put him in a race car a race car that I had just driven honestly not that long ago and like one lap any like vomited everywhere and it's like it was just because the motion and all of a sudden it was just a different feeling yeah it's so hard to tell people what that feeling is because it's it's very unique and I can go outside right now on

shoot a three pointer know that I'm not gonna play the NBA right I know that for sure yeah well I got a ton of dumb questions so I love it but do you ever get bored while you're driving so it's not a miles I know it is and yeah five hundred miles like six pit stops but the crazy part about the ND500 specifically is you are on the limit of control almost all the time

and you're always doing something because at that speed yeah it's if it looks like you're out

of control you're crashing and you're probably in a lot of pain so there's no moments where like you know when when when you drive on the highway and you like drive from point A to point B and then you

“get there and you're like oh I actually don't remember like drive it really like I was kind of in”

the zone you know just just go it I can almost tell you what happens on every lap okay all right there

a ton you're always thinking about something you're always you what we have adjustments in the

car where we can tune the handling of the car we can adjust the fuel map you know we can we can tune almost a lot of different things and you've got to make fuel mileage sometimes too so now you're trying to adjust every lap on where you lift is it gonna put you under pressure from behind there's all kinds of things that are happening that you just can't really see unless you're in there right

“are you are you addicted to to speed honestly I've I've never done recreational drugs but racing”

is my drug for sure like that adrenaline feeling that when you get above 225 miles an hour there's something about that that like makes you I think it's like the fear death adrenaline like you know how people if they're all about to die they can be superheroes and like climb mountains or something like that I feel like that that is what I think we feel because on the edge of control and knowing how because I've hit a wall and and there are those who have hit walls and there are

those who will right it's just part of the game but that feeling is unbelievable and it is addictive for sure yeah so it puts your body in the zone of like you might die at any second yeah naturally you feel that and then it releases whatever I imagine that whatever you feel might be addictive and why it might be one of those things where it's like there's there's nothing that you can do besides going over 225 miles an hour that will replicate this feeling that you have in your brain is that

that was the fastest you've ever been 243.7 miles an hour technically I have a record at the speedway for trap speed and turn three so it's it was very fast I felt like far too fast I did lift right after that like whoa I came in the pit it was scary yeah so like Big Cat was talking about when you're when we're driving on the highway it's like the lazy thing you can do you can spend all day behind the wheel of a car then you step out and you feel just like a real piece of

shit like you didn't do it your body didn't accomplish anything that day but when you're driving it's a workout right like how how many calories do you burn as you're in a single race

“honestly it's a lot so our cars don't have power steering right and there's no you know air”

conditioning no sea warmers no no anything like that so we're you know we're under a lot of heat stress if it's warm out for the most part you're you can lose up to like 10 pounds in the race like I've definitely lost that before depending on on the temperature outside and you know could be

a 5,000 calorie day like I got we wear these woop wristbands obviously and those are it's amazing

what technology has done to actually track that stuff now yeah like my dad used to race in forming the one back in the day and I remember he said he had a doctor that tried to attach a heart rate monitor but it was like all these crazy things back in the day you couldn't really track it unless it was you know kind of crazy and and now we have all this information that's cool to be able to share with people yeah what's it what's your heart rate over the course

of race oh I mean it it's an average of like 165 like you're like you're for three hours you're you're at maximum like if you have no yellow flag like no crashes or anything you're fully pushing

“the whole time which is it's not it's hard and that's and that's why we train like I was I was”

tell people you kind of train like triathletes that fight because you have to have like a high intensity heart rate the whole time but also be will it like be able to deliver power yeah are there any drivers that after they retire they just get fat because they're not doing these like huge workouts every day with their heart rate at 165 beats per minute I don't think so because we kind of have to be psychos about it so you it's in your mind all the time like you have to be doing something I

feel like if I'm not working at or if I'm not getting my heart rate up doing something I almost feel like I'm not doing something right you know right all right so you you started when when were you first when did you first start racing so I started when I was 10 years old I'm 34 now I started when I was 10 all right so when you're 10 how quickly is it because that is like everyone's dream when you're 10 years old like you know I remember being 10 years old and getting to drive

in a golf cart me and like this is the coolest thing ever right and then like you know on vacation passing you know the the different like cart you know like oh we could just do this gocarts and my parents were like no we're not doing that we're not stopping for you to go gocarting but I was like I just want to gocart was it like that when you were 10 or was it quickly like oh no this is actually gonna be my future so I have to start taking it seriously you know that's a

great question because I I didn't I I didn't know what was possible I I looked at I grew up in Indianapolis right so the 2500 my mom worked at the race track my dad my dad retired before I was

born but he was doing television locally for for the track and so like that so I was always at the

track but I thought these guys were just like superheroes they were my superheroes I was like they were put on the surf they didn't get born they just appeared and they were superheroes and as I watched and then I got into gocarts and I was like well I like football like I wanted to play football so bad too I I was sure I looked like a new baluma and like kind of chubby and so I was like I got to play wide receiver they put me at nose guard and I was like I don't think I'm gonna I don't think

loved it but there was I didn't want to practice those things and when I got into a gocart I wanted to do that like all the time right and it only got serious though when I started to turn like 14 15 and then you're you win some things and it seemed to be going the right way and then my dad handed me a mechanical engineering book he's like read this and I was like I'm doing like algebra like I don't know what I don't know what I'm supposed to do with this but that was the path like

he knew what it took to make it in this sport and like any other sport you're probably playing in middle school you're probably playing high school you're probably going to play in college and it's similar in racing it's a similar path and amount of years before you actually can get to a pro level and like make it a job right what's what's the worst crash you've been it

“oh man I thankfully I've never been like severely injured I think but I there have been some hits”

there's one one crash in Texas with my friend Joseph Newgarden he's a 500 champion twice but he I spun into him and I broke his collarbone in his hand not not me but the wall did it was very painful that was a tough one I probably hit like at 80 G's 85 85 G's I think is the heaviest impact that I've had yeah and that seems like a lot of G's you feel it well the space shuttle launching is like eight or something like that seven or eight I think so it's it's very

painful yeah but it's impressive how safe these cars are these days you can smack walls the thing cars can explode and catch on fire and you can just jump out like it's impressive where we've come I guess yeah so you were saying that you had to you had to learn mechanical engineering is every race car driver they have like a physics and engineering background sort of because you you want to get the best out of your car right so if you talk to your engineer every driver's

got an engineer and you're going to work with that guy to make the car better every session and so when you talk to him you kind of have to be able to describe hey the car is not turning how I want to turn give me some options let's talk about what we can do and you're going to adjust the springs you're going to adjust the toes cameras whatever it is ride heights geometries there there's a whole list of my long we're not just getting in and driving and hopefully me driving better

it's like we're going to work together as a team it's a very much a team sport to kind of give

me the best package on race status shopping and and win and it's not always the right one but you

want to try to use all your practice days to make sure that you understand how to get the best out of it how many practice days you guys get so for the 500 we actually get more than than any other like we have April 28 29 we we run two days at the speedway to like get everything going get the rust off get things a little bit loose and then race like race practice week we have four days in a row of practice so Tuesday to Friday Friday is fast Friday before qualifying week

and we have two days of qualifying another day of practice and then another day of practice on carb day yeah which by the way that was bullshit we went to carb day and that wasn't just everyone eating carbs it wasn't no man like we we showed up like carb day is gonna rock it doesn't

“mean I think carb rate or dude and we're like yeah fuck that makes sense there wasn't a pizza”

festival sadly I know no we we literally we just want at first group week we showed up like

dude carb day this is gonna be so much fun yeah we check the rate or you fucking more are we check out the snake pit the snake pit also rocks you go to snake pit right that's my one race day tradition so I and and people question it but I but the 500 has gone well for me last few years so I'm gonna keep doing it but I I love that music I love media I love the talent that gets to come for the snake pit and it's the craziest day ever

8 a.m. you got 40,000 people just absolutely drunk right and very early and if for me it's like a 945 to 1015 window where I've got a little bit of a downtime of my schedule and I'm gonna go to the stage and I'm gonna get up there and I have every DJ that plays a snake pit on the back

of my helmet for every race and I try to get them all to sign it before the race I've never

got all the DJs to sign it because they're either not there yeah but it's kind of a cool little like piece of history that at the end of the my career I can be like yeah I've got all these like all these random artists have signed my and they probably have no idea who I am at some point but then we had we become friends and my favorite part is to ask like what did you actually think of it and like we've never seen anything like this before people are hammered at 45 and just living their

“lives yeah so we went and I remember it was like double deception because like big cats said”

carb day did not involve pasta and then they're like we'll see you in the coke lot oh yeah and then that was that was Coca Cola yeah yeah but you can yeah respectful respectfully bring I'm not gonna get into this because I don't want to be about you I should buy the book I actually wrote wrote about that chapter quite a work was on the RV with us yeah wait for it is good time so yeah it sounds like it's an awesome tradition especially for somebody that that is from

Indy and then recently you've had a lot of good luck in the Indy 500 right or I guess you've had

we've been in the top 10 we've led every race and like we've we've definitely had two very

“very good chances at winning and just there's their small things you have to have the perfect”

data when that race and a lot of people say like the track chooses who wins there's kind of like an aura about the the speedway that that you know you have to be really lucky or just have the perfect day and we've been very close which has been awesome I mean the only reason I still show up is because I believe I can win that race and I think we've got a great team to do it and

yeah it's you never know what can happen though like I drop kicked a tire one year into the

grandstands that just fell out of the sky and that ruined my day like we led the most laps car crash tire flies off it's the front of my car I'm like that's never happened before and but those things that's part of racing yeah when you when you get into first place in the 2500 is there a party that's like oh shit oh shit oh shit I'm in first place holy fuck you know what's funny about it is there's so much air movement at 200 and third like the air

“is you're like in a hurricane at that speed right so when you get to I don't I'll never forget”

when I got to lead for the very first time it was quiet I was like man this is and I could see everything so much clear it's like so much nicer but there's a there was a piece about it that was like all right this is exactly what you want to do this exactly what we want to be uh and and staying there's obviously the hardest part but it was a really cool feeling to kind of experience the first time that level of everything is chaos everything is chaos and then you get to lead and you're like

all right this is what we need to be doing yeah it's cool it's actually you have some questions Zach I exact you play video games with race cars video games at race cars yeah not like a force but I do play some games on racing oh nice you think you could do it an actual race car yeah oh not a chance oh I got the body for it I think it is like a severe workout we can put you in the indie cartoos either though I honestly like we can fit you in there we they're like a taxi yeah

stuff like that probably one of the coolest days in my life I got to ask a question to like

Vin Diesel and Paul Walker was still there RIP Paul Walker but that was that was that was an amazing

experience so yes fully in full influence it's awesome I love to hear that what about what about cars the movie is that real do they talk the cars no okay but you I often talk to my car definitely do you know I don't I don't but but a lot of people do and they sometimes put

“like actual like stickers of the name and I think my teammate actually Jack Harvey I did look in”

his car last week and there was a female's name so I'm not sure what that might be in there I have to ask about I feel like cars are women right yeah come on yeah for sure for some reason we just like to speak to them in a nice endearing way yeah exactly anything else I was curious about the truck series yes are those trucks legitimately that low or is it kind of like an optical illusion no they are so I've done some mass truck races and and it's a different art form but it is

they are very low and and if they're too low it's actually very bad like you can you can start hitting the front of the thing off the ground and it makes it handle very bad also I have crash really badly in a truck to it that also hurts so don't don't crash a truck I burn my foot in a truck because they was such a big fire in the front of it so yeah trucks are wild man it's it's it's it's a different art form but it's a lot of fun yeah what uh you mentioned teammates

there that part always like confused me about race because you're trying to win like is it tough

to be like hey I have my teammate here I'm trying to help him or and how does that work like the pass off even you see it with F1 where like one guy is clearly better and they just the other guy just has to help him the whole time that would come suck yeah it's it's an interesting part about racing I think what is most helpful is is having a good teammate because we get a lot of data that comes off the car right so you can see everything that you're doing but also your teammate

your throttle traces break traces steering and so if you have a good teammate it's actually quite helpful because if you're both quick then you can see what each other's doing and maybe even be better

made seem are communicating on like strategies like hey if we're gonna pit maybe we don't pit on the

“same lap so we don't you know cross swords on the eggs you know I mean like we don't want to you know”

we want to make sure that both of us are kind of on the same page and and it's really just like that if you have a teammate let's say your teammate's struggling and he's having a tough day and you might be lapping a teammate or something like that he's gonna help you out right and he's probably maybe gonna not help out the other guys which is you know that's that's strategy like yeah I got had moments before where I caught my teammate and I'm like hey look guys we're faster right now

right and you know he might give you chance to go buy which is which is again could help us both out later in the race depending on where you're at but teammates are usually usually helpful yeah but you do want to beat them they're first that you want to beat right and it is it can you tell right away like when you get in a car and you just like no hey this car is not perfect today and it's gonna be a struggle the entire day because that's got to be a kind of

shitty feeling yeah absolutely I've never I've never really got to drive for like the top top like

highest level teams so I've kind of always been through you know working working at it and really getting the best out of what we had and and you can definitely tell and and the best part is actually interviewing some of the guys you know like Alex Polo won the 500 last year he is with the best team right now and and they just want to race over the weekend not because he was the fastest car but because that team had a pit stop that was one second faster when they needed it right so those guys

like everyone works together and and and sometimes your best day might be fifth but if you're

“competing for a championship you got to finish fifth that day and and it's just that's what's”

hard about every weekend and racing is that it is different every track is different every track requires a different setup every track even every 10 degrees you might have to change the setup because the weather affects the tires the weather affects the way the car handles and the wind can change the way the car handles so all those things go into you know what we have to do to to be successful and it's hard at the end of day only one person's happy one winner you know like after football

game if the interview the quarterback he can't say anything bad about like his offensive line yeah as a driver is it like against the etiquette to say anything bad about the car oh probably yeah it depends on who you are if if you're super successful all the time you can probably get away with a bit more if you haven't been as successful yet you probably can't get away with that as much yeah but the the crew that do put in all the work it's so hard to talk bad about any of those

guys and girls I mean they're they're busing their butts like all day long early mornings they get the 500 to show up like five in the morning you're there all day you've been there all month so it's hard to say anything bad about about the crews because they they do work so hard

yeah yeah the crews obviously that's one of the most amazing parts of motor sports is when they

jump over the ledge and then like two seconds later four new tires everything screwed in and the car appeals out it's like how does that how does that happen how do you even get good enough a changing attire to be a professional like that like what's it what's the career path like for those guys that you know it's I think it's different for everyone I feel like we actually oddly enough had an offensive alignment for the packers a couple years ago he ended up as my

fueler because he loved motor sport and massive dude and carrying the fuel rig requires a massive person yeah and so the team owner the time just was like hey do you want to like come in and try out to be on the crew and now he's on he's he's on the mire shank racing team he's a really good I mean he's still in racing he's he does a great job massive dude and so it just depends like

“I think a lot of people are very good mechanics and that's what they went to school for that's what”

they do and there are people who just love cars too and they want to put in a lot of work and so there's a lot of different and a lot of women in our sport too that are that are that are actual sling and wrenches and sling and wheel guns that's a great idea though like anybody that doesn't get drafted and they don't get invited to or after the last round of cuts in the NFL just hit up all the offensive line and defensive line would be like hey you want to carry fuel rig

your fast dude I think it's going to happen more than you you think like we need those guys and and it's it's a kind of cool gig yeah we talked a little bit about how you had you're now managing type one diabetes like when did you discover that you were a diabetic so I was 14 when I got diagnosed like what is the one that wasn't your fault yes yes yes I forget no unlucky duckling yeah it's all good no family history or anything started losing a ton of weight was just

drinking waters like I was siphoning water into my body however I could and my family didn't really know what it was like but I I guess I'm lucky that I have kind of this mental attitude where I was like all right well I guess I have to do this now when can we race again and so I was in a race car like a week later but it's just been something that I've been dealing with and

and it's it's never stopped me from doing anything you know monitor it all the time pretty aggressively

now that they know the story because a long time I didn't talk about it when I like when I

“signed that form in the one contract to be a development or they're like yeah don't say anything”

about this because no one was really in our sport yet with it and so we didn't really know how to handle it but now it's it's you know now it's actually there's like there's a ton of athletes you know mark injuries with the with the ravens like I got to me mark I was like dude this is awesome like you're out here doing this as well like there's there's all other yeah exactly there's other great athletes with type one diabetes and you know if we can inspire you know families or kids to to

to you know push for their dreams still why not there's so many kids that that's struggle with it and I hate that form but I'm like I'm fighting those battles to every day but if you can get you know get control of it and you can do it there's there's still so many opportunities out there to like live and do what you want to do do you ever have to like an emergency candy bar so no in the car I've got a drink to basically full of gatorade or any any sugary beverage yeah like a hummingbird

what about like regular life oh yeah yeah there's there's airheads in my car like there's all kinds

of stuff I don't want type or diabetes with that part always like was appealing to me where it's
