Yeah. And that's also like for me. Um. I really fell in love with bees. Not honey.
Um. So i do take honey from the bees. But. How did that start? Tell me about the bee.
My uncle. I was 13. My uncle was like really really. A very gentle.
“To me he seemed like sing Francis of a CC or something like that.”
He seemed almost like a spiritual guy. But he had been a football player for like LSU. And he played center. And so. And then he boxed.
And then he was a fireman. And he had a lot of. He had problems with his brain because of. CTE. And repetitive trauma.
And.
But he always just had a real kindness to him for a guy that had been such a
mutualist in his life. And I was very attracted to that way of being. And when you're around bees. You really have to be like that. So how did it start?
I just wanted to live with him one day. And um. I remember we took off the bonnet. We were wearing bonnets. We took them off.
And we just sat there with them. And. You have to be kind of like still and. Thoughtful and move slowly. And I just love to all those parts of it to me.
That was like the. You know, I sound like such a. Uh, I do have an edge in me somewhere. But I guess I'm not expressing it. What is the bees?
Hmm. Where are they? Are they in Vermont? Yeah, I have bees in New York City as well. Yeah, the bees in New York City.
I just made it back. I've been like, you know, when you have something like that. They are carrying for your day dreaming about them a lot of the time. And I'd left the hive for, you know, there's a late forage that comes on with like golden rod and stuff like that. And I'd left it with an extra box on top for them to fill just in case or they become honey bound.
And I'd never taken it off.
And then it got cold. And now they have to heat a quite a large space. Hmm. And I've heard it been freezing a couple of times.
I'm thinking about, okay, they're alive.
But they're hating this.
“And so I got back, shrunk everything down.”
Make sure they don't have honey put a thing on top filled with wood chips that takes up moisture. And then I insulate them just a little bit just to break the wind. And then that night it went down to 12 degrees Fahrenheit. No. And I was like, no, they're good.
That was so good. They're good. Yeah. If you hadn't done that, what would have happened? They might have been okay.
I mean, bees are pretty durable in the winter. It's not the thing that kills them. Moisture kills them more than cold. Like if they get wet and then it's, yeah. Like if it gets wet, their own, they create
a condensation in there because of the temperature difference. So that like two gallons of water will go through a hive in the winter. I love it. And you want to let it go up through the witships and down the sides of the walls. I'm, anyway.
I'm thinking about them like all the time. It's, it's, it's, it's, it's somebody there who's someone who. I do it. I do it. But if I'm away, I know a beekeeper in Vermont.
So I also have them in Vermont. The ones in Vermont are really hard because I have bears. And bears have taken out my bees. You have bears. Yeah.
Bears have taken out my bees twice.
“Big time where they just destroyed everything.”
Like five hives. And then once where I was able to get it back together. And I saw it doing it once. Actually, I got into my kids.
I always tell this story where like,
I hadn't learned to have the really serious electrical fancy. So I had like, when you use for chickens because we also had chickens up there. Oh. And so I'm doing this like chicken fencing, whatever. Bear goes right through it.
I see them. It's one intention. The bear have to think. I think one's a lot. They want the larva.
Yeah. The people think they're after the honey like when either poop. Yeah. The honey is just the extra. They're there after the larvae, the protein.
And they eat frames. And so I saw him do it. I rammed down there and started yelling at him. At the bear because the bear. Yeah, because the bear.
They're full of a bad. I mean, these are black bears. And they don't have a tack. They're really big. I mean, they're like 300 pounds.
Some of them. But they're not. I know it sounds cavalier. They really are a different type of bear than like a grizzly or a codiac or brown or polar bear. Will they do something maybe?
But like certainly not if you're making a lot of noise going toward it. That's right. They run away. And so we ran away. And then as I'm like trying to reinforce it and put the whole thing back together, I get it.
So that I've Jerry rig something that could really protect my bees. I go up the hill. I get up to the house. The girls are watching the bear comes right through. Nox the whole thing.
It takes it out. And I was like. No. So that's what I'm dealing with. It's man versus nature up there in Vermont and I'm losing.
Are there more bears than they used to be? Definitely. And is that because of the climate? You know, actually think because of the climate, there's more bears in the towns. Yeah.
Because they're going toward there for food because we've had a number of droughts and stuff. And that's when they start getting interested. I don't leave trash out or anything. I just have my bees, which are a big reason for them to come by. But if there's enough food in the forest, there's no problem.
So yeah, they go to the dumpsters and delete anything. But we haven't had like in Japan. I know they have some problems with interactions between people and bears. Yeah. What's a honey like?
You have to put honey in there. It's more easy to describe. Like the honey in Vermont really comes in seasons.
So you have like, you know, the dandelions first or maybe some.
Yeah. I have a load of apple trees. So like that for sure. Then. So the main ones though are dandelion, clover, golden rod.
Those are like big chunks. And then there's also maple flowers come in at certain points. So it's it's it's fairly uniform, but not completely. New York. I get like a checker board high.
Yeah. Yeah. Very different. It's all different things. And there's so much forage in New York City.
And also the. The heat being held by all the concrete and everything being next to the water. I grow. Figs. Very easily and well in my backyard.
Most of them. Yeah. Cause an Italian.
“I believe must have owned my house back in the day is to be.”
Also tell me that if you think that. New York.
I always think of me I always think like there's a direct line from London to New York.
But New York is latitude as Naples. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's very south.
And it stays. So I don't think we could go fake yet. We've got an artichoke here. We've grown for a lot of beans. I have an olive tree on my roof.
About like a persimmon. And we have a persimmon. Yeah. Yeah. The persimmon.
I had a persimmon for a while.
Can't grow them. I grow lemons. But I bring them inside. Yeah. You have to.
One. This is funny.
“I have one that Reese with her spoon gave me.”
Yeah.
From we did a movie together called rendition.
Yeah. This was I think. Thirty years ago or something. And I've cared for that thing. Really actively for thirty years.
And it really puts out lemon. It smells great. Yeah. I love it. And LA is some.
I was just came back from LA. And lemon. Well they together. That's incredible. It takes us for granted.
Yeah. Hi. It's so interesting. Host of the spirit daughter podcast. Or we talk about astrology.
