but as he tells, it was another school that gave him the best time. Let's go back to your high school days. Big-time recruit, we love asking the guys that

“played their best recruiting story. Give us one that you still remember. That's one of your”

better ones. In the first in Miami, Coach Frank Hay, took a bit of anybody to Miami.

Really wasn't on my radar like that. My friend Durant Scott ended up going there, a guy new from back home, Julian Gamble's playing at Miami at the time. And I was like, man, just take a bit of like, I mean, doing Frank Hay, he's from brother to nook, and on a japan-clank shot at him, I see him all the time living in Miami. He was my host. We get there. You know, campus, I'm like, wow, this is no way campuses like this every day. They have like a pool party.

Not that like a pool party and all that, I'm like, it's no way campuses like this every day. I get out between the go to the Hawks. First of all, he played all of game game one. And I'm like, wow, this is amazing. I mean, Miami riding around in nice cars, going to NBA games. Then we got out between just to go out and party, have a good time, but there's one of my funnest memory because it's like, no way Miami is like this every day. I know school cannot be like this,

going to South Beach and doing those things. But it was just a great visit. The school did a great job of hosting me and Jack McClain did a great job. I've been my host, but there'll be my story

while I would never forget because I was pulled to leave Sunday and I told my mom,

now I'm about to stay two more days. And she's like, you better get to tell on that plan and come on.

“You got to school tomorrow. That's how much fun I was having. Did you go back?”

I had no choice when you moved. The mama Francis said, you don't have play. You get on that playing. I love the idea of you as a high school kid going. I'm staying here for two more days. It's okay. There's how much fun I was having on my visit. It's like, my you going somewhere. I really don't want to go. And then you get there and it's too much fun. You don't want to leave. That's kind of how that was. Today, they think that they had you at

any point. They're like, we just get them here. They're on my second school. I was going wherever Coach cow was at. Once I seen Derek rose play, Oklahoma in the garden and the way Derek rose play was like, it's just perfect behind play. This is exactly how I play. I just wanted to take

see what they all about. But all right, New York, I was going wherever cow was at. I was going. So the Carolina schools were out. I mean, imagine they were like, you're not, we're not even in the picture here. You're not going to see a lot of with my dreams school, Carolina, my dreams throughout watching my life. I mean, see station out. I'll see any little use on my radar. I'm I'm those my mom and favorite school. And she had got a sick at that

point. I would have like a any reason in her head. So it was almost the point where I would have

went there just to stay close to my mom. And then do, do you know, me, Coach cow? You can never

get wrong with Duke. But they just they didn't have a lot of one. It does at a time that I didn't believe in one of Duns. And also they brought like Nolan Smith and John Scharer back that was Juniors and seniors. So I was just like it was best fit for me to do somewhere else. He's a Super Bowl champ. The number two overall pick in one of the best past rushers of his generation. But how did Vaughn Miller end up at Texas A&M? He shared his best

recruiting story. Let's look back at your recruiting time. I was looking at it. Your four star.

“I think the one ranking edge you like is the 15th best edge guy in high school, which just kind of”

seems hilarious. After Hall of Fame career, but you're at DeSoto. I know there was offers everywhere,

still even with the four star thing. What's your best recruiting story that you remember from that time? Oh man. So when I was coming out, this was this was the time when Texas and USC were like two of the best school. Reggie Bush then shown like it's like right after that. Like the two schools that I wanted to go to Texas and USC. Anybody asked me where I wanted to go? Texas and USC didn't get an offer from Texas and USC, defensive coordinator at USC is Ken Norton Jr.

Longbackers coach here with the commanders. And I asked him like, you know, what's going on? Like he said that, you know, they wanted me to play Longbacker off the ball. They asked my hair coach. What I'll be willing to do that. And I had told my hair coach, no, like still you've got to sauce it up for me. You know, you got to like, no, he doesn't, you know,

“he doesn't know what's going on yet. He wants to play edge pressure. But, you know, I think,”

you know, he's going to be able to play. I don't think Coach Meadows did that. I think Coach Meadows said, you know, he's he wants to play a defense of me and he's not playing any opposition in college.

So boom, they only offers from those two schools. My number, I never had, I never

take them was never like really pound my list like that. Like I've never, you see all these other schools like Florida, Michigan, Ohio, you see all these other schools like LSU and like stuff like historically like, you know, football schools. For me, like, I never knew anything about Texas in them. My, I had an older brother that went to Oklahoma State in the first game that I went to was Oklahoma State versus Texas and then in color station.

And we drove down there. I got my Oklahoma State stuff on and I was just blown away by the fans there. I was blown away by the atmosphere. I was blown away by the campus. I was always underneath, under the impression that college was like spread around like the town, like you got East campus, West campus, all these different campuses that's on spread out at Texas and them is just this one big block and it's just packed in with Texas and if students and then you

got West campus right across the street. Like, but it's all together. Like it's all in one spot, you can ride your bike. It might take you 45 minutes, but you can ride your bike from

“one side to the other. And I really, that's what I envision college of being like I went to the”

game and like, you know, the 12 men, they stand up the entire game and they have yells and chants and I was just blown away by the fans, even though like I'm supporting you know, Oklahoma State and Texas and them offering me like a month after that and they were like, the school, like at any of the day, Coach Stan Egan, he had wrote every single letter to me, like in a day and age where you could just type it up. You could type up all these different

letters. He, he had wrote every single letter and I got a letter from Texas and him every week. Like, yeah, I might even got two or three letters, but at least every week I got a letter from Coach Egan. He hand wrote every single note and that just they won me over and I wanted to be, you know, like, Aggie, I was, you know, they said I was going to play these months of man. I came to the play these months of man one year and they moved me off the ball down back here. My, my south

when you're the same thing that probably would have happened. It takes the USC, but it was just

and I'll let the NCAA and sex with 17 and a half and you know, the rest is history.

“Dunkin Robinson, Detroit, Piston, Dunkin Robinson, went from high school DNPs to division three”

Williams to the Michigan Wolverines all the way to the NBA. We take them back to the New England high school days and it's best recruiting story when he's just trying to figure out how to keep playing. Let's go back to that time. Give me your best recruiting story. My best recruiting story where you reach an out to power five programs and they're like, we're good. You have Williams written all over you. I was powered by that ice cream kidding me. I was

begging like some division three's in division two's to take me like it. This was like a All right. I'll give you one. It actually has nothing to do with any any school. I uh my junior year.

So first off to provide a little context super late bloom. I was five six is a freshman in high school.

I was you know, I was a good little player, but was small light, lacked confidence, could like handleball a little bit, shoot a little bit. But basically I just shot up like three three to four inches a year for like three to four years straight and went from five six to six six by the time I was a senior. As you could maybe imagine during that time, I was not the most athletic or coordinated person. I mean, I was real thin was like, could hardly run and chew bubble gum, right? Like I was

coordinated, but like I was just slow. Like I I took me a lot of really like throwing in my body. Not that I'm like super fast now, but I got considerably more athletic. When I was not with people with things, faster than people with thing. Thank you. When I was a junior, as many people know, that's like around the time that you kind of start to get recruited by colleges. I posted, I think 10 DNPs,

the first 10 games of my junior year of high school. Now mind you, I was on a very mediocre high school

team. Like I think maybe one kid, one or two kids went on to play division three college basketball. So it wasn't like I was playing for some powerhouse. I couldn't get off the back of the bench. Finally, about halfway through the season, I like started playing like spot minutes, right? And this is a little bit of a different time. Like the resources were different. We weren't filming

“our games. And I remember having a conversation with my dad and I was like, hey, I think you need”

to start like getting footage if I want to try to play college basketball. We got to figure out something like push it out there, do something, and he's like, all right, let me see what I can do. So my dad, I mean, just probably swallowing his pride, because his son is coming to him like, can we figure out a way to film this? My dad writes an email to somebody in the athletic department saying, hey, is there any way that we can start filming games for the boys basketball

team? My son has aspirations to play college basketball. In their response, he got. And I'm not throwing anyone in the bus, because I'm not interested in doing that, but it was somebody within the

higher higher education department, some cross and athletics, basically response, you don't think

your son is actually going to play college basketball. So you like, really, we're going to have to like go out and like get technology and like hire somebody to feel like you won't think that's going to happen. But dad was like, well, I don't know what's going to happen, but like can we at least just film like, you know, other schools are filming like can we at least just film? So anyways, we proceed to film the last one, you know, 10 games or so. We get a little something on tape.

I try to like send it out to a bunch of schools, obviously nobody's interested. I do end up having

“a pretty good senior year, and that's what I opted to do the fifth year, because I didn't have any”

offers. And even actually when I did my fifth year high school, I still didn't have any offers. I was like backing like Ivy League Patrily schools to take a look at me. And nobody was really interested. So I ended up playing a year at Williams, which is awesome. It was probably the best decision I've ever made. And then somehow, this doesn't make any sense to me. But then somehow like 16 months later, I get like a high major offer from from Michigan and Creighton and Davidson. I'm like,

what a hold on. I'm like, oh, I am in as like 16 months older. And now I'm all sitting good enough to play in the power five or power four, whatever it is these days. But yeah, so we pulled the trigger on Michigan, and you know, spent four years there playing for Coach B and graduated 24 years old. A season 24 years old. Exactly. Exactly. Alexi Wallace is one of the biggest soccer broadcasters in the states, and American soccer legend

played professionally in Italy and MLS. What is the kid from Michigan? How did he end up playing

Alexi Wallace where you were named Michigan player the year. I know some animals. It says

“you had a late start. I don't know how accurate all that stuff is. But we like to do this with”

the guys. Give me your favorite recruiting story from that time. So, I grew up in the 70s and 80s, you know, with, you know, bubble yum and MTV and Slurpees. And you know, that was kind of my life. I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit. So it was like, you know, the red wings and little seasers. And that kind of stuff. I grew up playing more hockey than soccer because it's the law in Michigan.

And I really gravitated to soccer because of the international aspect of it. I was always

in awe and fascinated by the fact that when I went out on my sidewalk in front of my house and I was juggling my soccer ball that there was a young kid on the other side of the world. We had nothing in common with except this. And this is what the thread was. I also love the autonomy of soccer where the whistle blows and you're left to your own devices, relative to a lot of other sports up there. So I, I really love that. But I was also growing up in the

80s and when, you know, there was no YouTube and the recruiting platform, especially for soccer was certainly not even close to the robust thing that it is right now with all the technology we have. So I got rejected every, I wanted to go and try to play division one college soccer. Didn't know how I was going to do that. I got rejected everywhere that I, that I sent letters to that I applied to. My dad took pity on me and called up Rutgers University. Okay, because I had

sent a way for an application. I had never, it just because I had read an article about Rutgers.

“And the coach said, well, I don't know anything about you, but can I meet you?”

And so we jumped in the car and drove from Detroit out to New Jersey. I spent four hours with the coach. And at the end of our meeting, he said, well, you know, we're kind of going through a rebuilding year. And so I can invite you to pre-season and I can get you into the agriculture school. And, you know, I grew up in Michigan. I did not grow up on a farm, but I was like, fine, great. No problem. Let's do it. Because I had absolutely nothing. We drove back. I packed up.

We drove back to New Jersey. He slowed the car down. Kick my ass out on exit nine off the turnpike right there in New Brunswick, New Jersey. And the rest is history. But I did everything wrong in terms of picking a school. I was not heavily recruited by any stretch the imagination. But what it did do is it dropped me into an environment where I was playing with and against some really,

“really good players. So the soccer gods smiled upon me, but man, oh man, I don't think I said a”

word the first month that I was at Rutgers because Rutgers was like something like, you know,

one and a half percent out of state. So I was an alien in in in Pascadaway and New Brunswick, New Brunswick there. I mean, the Jersey, you're not talking from month and a half, seems impossible. It's crazy. It's crazy. Like the Jersey kids, they were like Michigan might as well have been the other side of the moon. They had no idea where I was from. And I scared the crap out of them because I didn't talk for a month. I had all this hair and they again, they thought

it was from, you know, an alien from another world. But it worked out all right. It did work out. Chaining fry is an NBA champ. He was a top 10 pick in the draft and the Gatorade player the year in Arizona in 2001. He obviously ended up playing four years at the University of Arizona and shares his best recruiting story from his visit with another famous walkout player. Let's go back to your high school days. Oh boy, we know you ended up at Arizona. Give us your

best recruiting story from that time. Boy, okay, I'll tell you when Richard Okadooks me, right? So this is when he got game came out, right? So I'm in high school. Richard, I know Richard is out's 14. So everyone knows that clip with Rick Fox, whatever. So I'm going out there like, yes, here we go. So Richard knows this also. So we go, I go to Richard's house or he picks me up at the hotel, him and Gilbert. He basically says, hey, Chaining, let me see your wallet and I get per DM back in the day.

So he takes my per DM, we go to Jack in the box and he ends up using my per DM for his to be Jack in the box, which is dumb. And we end up going to his house, we end up being like, hey, he's going to go to a football game that a party. So it's all right, awesome. So I'm wearing my State Mary's Nike kind of, I don't want to say tech bit, we're going to sweat suit, kind of they exist say Mary's. He's like, yo, you can't go out like that. So now the whole team is there.

I remember Lauren Wood goes, oh, here, just wear this. So it's his blue U of A thing and he was

the stands and I'm looking in this section and like a puppy and a free bag of food, I'm looking at

“like all these beautiful women and I'm like, oh my Lord, yes. So they're like, Chaining,”

Chaining, you've got to come here. Chaining, you've got to come here. And then I'm on the Jumbo Tron, because I'm with Selim and Dijon Thompson at the time. And I'm like, oh, this is the best. So I'll tell you, we go to the party. We have a good time. Nothing crazy happens. I commit. So I go back to a game and I go hang out with Richard and I see those same girls. So I go, what Richard? Those are the girls from the football game. He goes, yeah,

those are my friends, dummy. We do this to every recruit. We just tell him we give him like a note card of like where they are so that these girls act like, hey, I've watched you at same

marries, blah, blah, blah, but they end up being best friends. And nothing happened and it was just

like the biggest topic of my life. And I'm glad it didn't happen, but I still went, but it was great. And so I did the same thing every year. I'd be like, hey boys, look at all these girls. Aha, and they were just good friends of ours that would like say, like, hey, I saw you have her 32 last year. They're like, look at how the note card. It was great.

“Yeah, because you would be like, there's no way. There's no one Arizona, right?”

No way, great, no way. Great rebounding numbers. You're junior in high school. Dude, we used to hit him with crazy stuff. They're like, dude, I'm so proud of you. That you got a 3.9. You so smart. Not like one of these regular basketball players. And he took your money. It took my damn money and left my wife. He lost my wallet, too. Richard. I love RJ, but that was awesome. That was awesome. He told me I needed to not have

a Velcro wallet at the time, but it was 1999. So, you know, you had to do a jettadoo. You know how much of you've been listening to this podcast. How much I love Raisin Cain's chicken fingers. And I also love the backstory, too, because it's a little personal. Almost two decades ago, down about Rouge for a disaster game against Alabama. That's happened a few times. I meet some people that went to school there, mover shakers, and somebody's like, oh, you've met

Todd Graves. He's the man behind Raisin Cain's. I'm like, man, that is a very specific lane. I hope it works out. It did work out. And it worked out for two reasons. Chicken figures taste fantastic. And Todd Graves is just an awesome guy. And Cain's continues to march on with chicken finger momentum.

1989. He ended up as an Ohio State Buckeye, even though he originally didn't want to go there. He shares why in his recruiting story. Let's go back to you in high school and I love to ask the guys to play this. Your favorite recruiting story from that time, whether it was at one point you thought you were going somewhere else or what closed the deal for you to end up in Columbus. I don't know if it's a favorite recruiting story, but when I came out of high school,

Kenny Anderson and I were ranked number one, number two in our class. Now again, shack was in our class, but shack couldn't participate in the Nike Camp 5 star camp, any of those camps to get ranked because he was in Texas. He got his notoriety as we got him to the all-star game, dapper, damn McDonald's. That's when it was just okay, shack. But Kenny Anderson and I were good friends, we took our visit to Syracuse together. We were going through Syracuse together.

I got there and saw how cold it was. It felt how cold it was. I know, I'm good now.

“But D.C. was my host at the time and then you know, back then we had the rotary phones, right?”

So, Kenny calls me. We're still talking about that. It was there, North Carolina, Georgetown, our three-top school. And Kenny calls me, rotary phone, and tells me he's going to Georgia Tech.

You know, Bobby Krim is with the master of getting guys out in New York City.

“But that, I mean, that would have been something special. I think if Kenny and I had went to Syracuse”

together on the back end with Billy Owens and that crew. At that time, it had been something special.

But that's, I never wanted to go to Ohio State, really. They were like my floor school.

So, how'd you end up there? Probably the best decision in my life, mentors, amazes. You can go to these other schools. Maybe get to the NBA, but being from Ohio, helping this be a part of something that changes the trajectory of the program is long last. Plus, Gary Williams at the time, really started recruiting McDonald's, all Americans. He had a Perry Carter, a Tragly, a Mark Baker, Chris Jen.

So, he really started to build something and me being a part of that with those 13 mates, it was the best decision I ever made. It was the best decision I ever made. It'd be a part of that three-year run at Ohio State to come to get best of all back to where it needed to be. Was a special time, a special moment in my life because of the team major and the coaches that I had that. So, if I have this, I could be wrong here. I'm just trying to remember the sports illustrated

covers, which helped me remember which grade I was in and then I can figure out the year. So, would you have Kenny had been, would you have been freshmen and Billy would have been a sophomore at Syracuse? Billy was a sophomore because he was a class of 88. Yeah, I think that would have worked out. I mean, Billy was as a college player. I'm going to Carl Alpen, Pennsylvania's finest, and I'm believable. I don't believe that.

I would have been that, but that's, but I grew up a biggie's fan, just because watching Georgetown, I mean, Villanova, Yukon, I mean, of course, St. John's, Syracuse. I mean, I was all, and it, you know, direct effect of having ESPN kind of their TV partner.

“That's what you saw on TV a lot of big Monday. You know what I mean? It was, that was it.”

That's why I want to go St. John's. They just didn't want me to go there. I got you.

Brendan Haywood won an NBA championship. He was a first round pick in the 2001 NBA draft,

and the high school player of the year in North Carolina. So, naturally he ended up a tar heal. And he tells his best recruits story where legendary Carolina coach Dean Smith wasn't remotely afraid of losing him to another school. Let's go back to high school, back in Greensboro. James B. Dudley. I love asking you guys to play. Give me your best recruiting story from that time.

So, I remember, at that point, obviously, I was being recruited by Carolina, but I was, I was being recruited by like wait for St. Miami, and, um, a whore, Clemson, and so no, yeah, no, I wasn't going to do. Duke was interesting, Elton Brand, and I didn't want it. I was like, man, I don't know. I don't know if I'm playing with if Elton was there. If I was trying to do it.

I've always been a realist. I was like, this brand guy's pretty good. I wasn't trying to share a minute.

So, I just remember, I was going, I was about to go on my visit to Miami, and I was coaching, I was talking to Coach Smith, Dean Smith. And so he was like, I, I hear you going down to Miami. And so I'm like, yeah, I'm taking my fish with down there tomorrow, Coach. He's like, okay, well, I see you on, um, I say, uh, I said, uh, he's like, I see you when you get back. I said, you know, you're not worried about me committing while I'm down there. He's like, nah, man, go ahead, take your vacation.

I don't even be back. So, like, that I was thought that was because Coach Smith was, it was just so calm. Like, yeah, go ahead. Like, you're going down there to kick it. I know where you're going. I know where you're going to end up to that for years. You were tempted at all to go to Miami?

“Yeah, that's what happens. Yeah. I mean, like, hey, that's it. I was like, I'm a young kid from”

Greensboro, North Carolina. Miami was a different animal. They, I guess I was able to go out and kick it apart for the first time. And I was a big Miami for hurricanes football fans. So I was on the field, remember how Miami's to come out through the smoke, uh, man, I was so hyped to be, I was really hyped to be there. But it was like, it was smart for Coach Smith to plant that sea like, yo, this is a vacation for you. At the end of the day, I know, I know where you're going to, I know

where you're going to be. Okay, did he know that though? Because he knew you and that if you're Greensboro kid, it's still you and C over everything else. Like, it has to be something to be a big time high school player and have the tar heels calling. Like, he just, he just knew the power of the brand, right? I think, like, the greatest of Coach Smith is he, he knows people well. You talked to anybody about Coach Smith. He knows everything about you. He knows everything about

your family. He, if he remembers things like, if he met your cousin one time six years from

but he knew me very well. And so even though I was going down to Miami, you know, once I'm

“even opposed the question, you know, it's just he was just dropping a break on like, yeah, you know,”

how many, how many big men has Miami put in the pros again? And that point doesn't mean I know. And so he's like, he's like, we've done, we've done a pretty good job with people like you. Like, it was, it's solidly, it's that subtle sum of Coach Smith had that subtle swag. He was like, I ain't going to tell you what to do. But for where you're trying to go, then ship nobody out there. We got a factory, but he, he said it's so smooth.

Like, I mean, like he asked the question that he already knew the answer to, how many big men have they put in the pros? Oh, yeah, yeah, we, we do pretty good with people with

your size. He didn't wake pitch you on dunk and going number one, then.

Yeah, wake, wake force actually, um, they, they pitched me on coming there. They had a guy by the name of Lauren Woods at their school. Yeah, some really glad you had. Yes, Lauren Woods, but I went to their practice and I had no idea that Lauren Woods was a maniac. Like, he was in prep, like he was talking crazy. Like every time he missed a shot, he was smackin' himself in the head. And he, I don't deserve the play to game. It was, I was like, yo, this dude, crazy. I'm not playing with

this dude. Like, they were like, yeah, you guys gonna be the next twin tower, as I'm sitting over there in Coach Olon's office. Like, you see that madding Johnson gift? I could be here. Like, there's no thing the world of coming to play with this guy. Like, Lauren's a Lauren turned out to be a really good player, but like the two practices I went to, he was active, like an absolute maniac. And I was like, no, I don't, I don't want to be with that guy.

Oh, Robbie Humble was a four-star recruit, but a bit of a late bloomer coming at a high school in Indiana. He ended up as a star at Purdue, played a couple years in the NBA, and a broad before becoming a great broadcaster. Before all of that, his best recruiting story starts with a trip to see Coach K and Duke practice. Let's go back to when you're a high school. You're the 75th rank player in your class. As you mentioned, you're a four-star kid. I imagine you're visiting

“everywhere, though, still. What, how were you six eight when you were a senior high school?”

By the time of the senior year, I was one of those kids that grew really late. I was five, eight, two guard on my eighth grade team. I get the freshman year high school. I'm six, five, sophomore year, six, junior, six, eight. So I go from like, my dad's six, six, my mom's pretty tall. She's like five, six or five, seven. So it's kind of like a matter of time, right? Like, I, I should grow. But yeah, by the time I'm a senior, I'm six for it.

With a father who's six five and a mother who's five, six. I don't, you know, I didn't quite fit that way. Yeah. So you're like, my mom's really tall. I was expecting to say five a lot. And you just gave me that math. And then I did the math in my head. And I was like, God damn it. Anyway, give me your best recruiting story from that time. I think it has to be. I've got two good ones. But I think the best one is, I'm, I'm getting

male from Chris Collins who's an assistant at Duke. And again, I mentioned the Kyle Stingler is in my high school class. So like, they're obviously recruiting him very hard as they should be because he was so good. And I'm, I have an offer to NC State and I have an offer, which is for herbsendek and I have an offer to UNC Charlotte, which is Bobby Lutz. So we're going to go over

“fall break in high school for like, like, basically a two campus tour, you know, I think we might”

went to a football game for NC State. And I'm going to see, you know, campus at UNC Charlotte. And because Duke is sort of recruiting me, you know, like, I'm on the board, we're going to go and we're going to watch them scrimmage. And this is like the team that had JJ Reddick, Sheldon Williams, Josh McRobber, so like a really good Indianity. And so I visited NC State,

I visit UNC Charlotte, get to Duke. And like, I'd seen Coach K, but I've, I've never talked to

my senior in AEU tournaments because of the guys he's recruiting. So we get there and it was awesome. The scrimmage was phenomenal because Duke's team was so good. And Coach K has got a microphone and he's sitting at the table and everyone's finally hit the horn and then he's like given instruction. And there's probably like 250 or 300 high school coaches that are there. And after the scrimmage ends, Chris Collins comes over and he's like, all right, Coach K is going to come over and and talk to you

guys. Like, I'm obviously nervous, my mom and dad are there. And you know, it's like, oh my God, Coach K is going to come over and talk to us. So he comes over and he's like, Robbie, thank you so much for coming all the way from California. I know how long the trip is. Which was just like, oh God, my mom, who's like, just, I don't know if she was like, oh, he must have just like made a mistake. Oh, Coach, we're from Indiana. And Coach is just he looks this and he's like, oh yeah. And there's

like, thanks for coming. And I was like, man, those letters from Duke don't mean shit. He just, that was like, oh, man, they are not really recruiting me that hard. But it was also hilarious,

Robbie Hummel, he's from California. All right, cool. And walked over and, you know, just because

“the GA set out from Cali and messed up, he, that's what he was told. I'm sure. But that was a humbling experience.”

That was a, well, Duke's recruiting you kind of, but not really that hard. So you're not hosted. You're not hosted for a weekend. No, it was an unofficial, you know, that my AU coach and my dad had kind of set up just because I'd been in touch with Chris a few times. And I've done so many more Western games. Chris Collins and I laughed about it all the time. Wait, it's the funniest thing that he did that. But I also had a visit to Purdue that was so bad. And I ended up going there.

I was there as a junior in high school and I was visiting with Joanne Johnson who was, I ended up being a part of the same recruiting class. And you know, we're playing pick up on a Saturday morning in September. And it's like a football Saturday. So you're playing it like 10 a.m. and then you're going to go to the football game and watch. And our team, I forget what, what guys in the team, we were linked up with. But our team was winning some of these pick-up games. And a lot of the times

with recruits, the recruits get put with, you know, whether it's all recruits or it's like a team with maybe one of the walk-ons. Like a lot of the times the recruits don't necessarily have teams that win, but they can stay on the court because the coaches say keep on playing. So our team is winning. And I get it steel. And I get a break away and I'm going to dunk this thing. I get tackled into the bleachers by one of the players on the Purdue team. And then another one runs up from behind me

and goes, "Welcome to the Big Ten Bitch." And I'm like, "I'm never going to Purdue." Like I will never

go to school here. And I remember, I didn't play, I had my freaking thumb in an ice cup because my hand had gotten Matthews from hitting the floor. And as a credit to Coach Panner and Paul Lusk and Kanzo Martin, they did such a good job of smoothing it over. And it did help that the guy that tackled me ended up getting kicked off the team, not because of this, but because of something else. Shortly thereafter, and like the team started to, you bring in Chris Kramer and Keaton Grant,

her high character guys. And just, but like that was one of my first visits to Purdue. And my thought was, "I'll never go there." I'm never going to Purdue. That was terrible.

“So those are my two best, I think. You remember the guy's name, the tackle, do I imagine?”

Oh, I know you're not just like this. Yeah, I know you're not going to say it. I don't know what he's doing now. I don't know where he's at now. So enough to look him up. I will. I should. I should look him up. NBA Champion Derek White went from division two hoops to the University of Colorado. And then

he came a first round pick in the NBA draft. We take the Celtic star back to his high school

days. Trying to get discovered for his best recruiting story. I want to go back to high school. We ask all of our guys this that played Parker Colorado. You're getting recruited. What's your best recruiting story from back in the day? Why you either ended up in Boulder or some other place that you thought you were going to go? What's your favorite memory from that time during your recruitment? At high school. Yeah.

I didn't have a whole lot of recruitment. My dad was sending out like highlight tapes to like all the division two is in Colorado. Just trying to give me any team interested. I don't know

“I think my favorite story is that Metro State was a big time division two basketball team in”

Denver, Colorado. They came in and watched me play a high school game. And I was just trying to walk on like I and I didn't expect to scholarship nothing. And like they went and watched and then after there like I wasn't good enough to walk on. And so that's probably like my favorite story. His like this division two team. Basically said I couldn't walk on and even just practice with their team. So that kind of put a chip of my shoulder and I think like one is like Coach Colver was

at recruiting me at Johnson and Wells and I didn't really have a whole lot of interest and going to Johnson and Wells. But I mean that that was cool that someone was recruiting me. And so like I was like super like a call I would pick up right away and like I think if like I had the mindset was like

I'm never going to go there and I was just like a jerk to him the whole time that if he got when

he got to job at UCCS he wouldn't have called me and like hey you want to come. And so I think that's a good lesson for a lot of the kids out there. It's like you never know who you meet what they're going to become and what they can do for you. He saw it with no one else did. So what was it tough then to be like hey I'm going to go to Boulder and transfer? Yeah yeah for sure. Like I had long saws in my family and people close to me and

it was tough like I loved it. I had UCCS. Like we had just won that armag like we just did a lot of

better like the Stratocase division two national championship. But then like talking people like

“I think it might be best for me and my career to go to see you was just kind of like it was like”

selfish like I didn't wait. You could have a way I was like I'm the selfish of what me but I knew it would be the best for me and my best opportunity to get to the next level and so I had kind of make to make to jump. You know here that allowed for basketball players like I felt a little selfish about doing this I didn't like that. It's it is crazy though like how visual we are not just in sports but like everything. Right? And I remember the combine in Chicago because I used to host

it for ESPN and one of my favorite scouts ever Steve Rosenberry and he's one of the best that I've ever talked to for 20 years and I figured which team he was with at the time but I got a little time with him in between you know whatever the television broadcast and he's like you know who's nasty and he points at you and I didn't know that much about you so I was like really and you're like

“trust me like watch this guy play and I think that's probably something that you certainly understand”

because it happened to you but that there would almost be this dismissive way of like looking at you or it's like well that guy can't be that good and then you run it around out there and it's like anybody that really appreciates like how a really good basketball player plays the game

and it also helped that you've got over six feet finally when I know that I know you're a bit of a

late bloomer after that but it must be just me like hey man you're telling me my life story up until you know you started putting up some numbers with the spurs where it was just it almost felt like anytime anybody started with you it started without about what you couldn't do yeah I think I don't like I don't have like that wow factor like I think a lot of times especially like those pre-draft things and you know like recruiting process like you kind of look at

for someone that kind of like wow's you and I don't think all I ever really have like every now and then I'll do something like wow that was impressive but um over the most part like I don't think I have that wow factor so I think I kind of just get overlooked overlooked but think over long long run that like what I do kind of works and that's got to stick with it yeah I think it works I think it works kind of Steve Novak ended up playing hoops of market then has a long MBA career including

with the champion next where he's part of their studio coverage before all that he was the pride of roundier high school of Wisconsin we asked about his best recruiting story from that time we do this with all the guys that used to play I remember 15 years ago being at course with the rotational I was watching you and I was like you know what I like about this guy is he's not just a catch and shoot guy I was like you know what because you know it looked the the list is

long of white guys that can shoot that we forgot and I remember one of the first things that you I was like he can he can reset himself with the dribble I was like this is there's more there's more to this guy and you end up having a long MBA career but let's go back to Brown dear Wisconsin yeah high school and share your your favorite recruiting story from that time for us. You know you're you know 16 17 years old and college coaches start

calling and and showing you some love and I mean you really do you feel like you're on top of the

world like you got to figure it out near the man and then the I'll never ever forget the thing

that made me feel like boy I must be doing something right as Mike Bibi was at USC Mike Bibi Senior and uh he was sending me when I say thousands of letters I mean there was a day he sent me 2,000 letters to my house in Brown dear Wisconsin all individual envelopes that were packed by the I found a letter there's said the office girls with like inspirational quotes or like a handwritten

“like you should commit or you're gonna love it here or just an inspirational quote”

2,000 letters all from USC that are like male carrier would come with these postal crates and just drop them and it would be like we were having it looked like we were on eggs delivered or something for the year and it happened all the time sometimes it would be like 255 which is a lot of letters other times it was 2,000 letters from USC and Coach Bibi came and I remember he watched me you know I was using the gun the rebounding machine at Brown

your high school and he was like I'm going to come visit you and I'm going to watch you shoot

and he was the first coach to tell me Steve and you know you're getting recruited and obviously

trying to make a kid feel good he said you're going to plan the NBA one day amen you know in

gone to college yet but I think you're going to be an NBA guy I've seen enough to know he said

if you come and you do an official visit at USC we've never had a guy who's come to campus not

commit he said you let me know when you want to come to USC and visit and I was kind of terrified to go visit because I was scared I was going to move to California and be so far away from the

“fan so I never went but I'll never forget those letters showing up and feeling like holy cow like”

shot a 50 I've got two buddies who both started in the last couple years one of them just broke a hundred and out the other one is just he's a bit of a wreck he's like the last guy I wasn't kissed a girl and he's like what are we just never going to have he just wanted to have but oh bad no I think it's so bad and the more he tries the worst he is I think and uh it just hit his head now yeah put a new tip in my head and I'll just forget everything else and

ball goes in the different directions anyway we could get back on track but I I feel like this guy's talked about it's not for I don't get his mad and I know I'm not good enough to get mad and that I'll just make whatever setting I've created by being the worst guy of the for some worse by

getting mad so I don't do that but I was happier before I started count. I've never hit the ball

better scores are worse. So Dark is the problem this guy it's this guy sucks and he's throwing clubs yelling giving up on holes bad vibes all around to quote the emailer here yeah if you're not good this is a lesson to everybody out there if you're not good beef you think it be yeah man keep the movement you don't look for your don't look for the Kirkland ball for more than 90 seconds you

you're having a good time the same thing is golf sure all right all right so I'd excuse him if he were to just bring a good attitude see that's the thing it's like if you suck but you're like quick and you're just going hey I'm having so much fun again faking it but he turns out of the second of all is a striped on the fairway I don't know I expect every shot to be

pure perfect but I guess we all kind of do I always try to be encouraging giving him the benefit of

the doubt etc but last week and I hit my breaking point I had to stay quiet for most of our around while I was riding in the car with him because he refused to talk since it was another one of those rounds you think he wouldn't come if that kept being the case but he still seems somewhat committed to wanting to play and get better upon returning home I had an epiphany his birthday's coming up and for everyone's benefit what if we bought him golf lessons so he could get better

and not only drag everyone else he plays with I don't think we ever bought him a birthday present you're the guys of course you did curious on how you would all react to being gifted that or what else you could do in my situation keep up the good work chance I love it I love it too sometimes it's anger though Steve is performative it's like I know I'm you like you're doing so bad especially if everyone else like stripes their drive and yours is gone like you almost need to be like

outwardly something is wrong this is not normal for me so you like sometimes the anger becomes a little performative just so you can be like guys I'm trying and I'm better than this so you could

“feed into it after a whole round but I think sometimes that initial it's like when you you fuck up”

something you know fuck up a shot and you like look at your hand you know like I think some of that's a performative so it's probably doesn't take it as seriously as like being offended if you gave him a lesson I'm not I don't even like the guy I'll get mad if I'm playing bad for like a couple holes and I'm just like you know I'm not talking a ton or like whatever I'm short with people but like it's a couple holes like we're not the whole round that that sucks I do get

really annoyed with the people who as this guy said if it's not a good shot every time they're like what happened like I sent up straight on my linemen's right like what about and it's like I'm not a dude that's golf like you can like little things can change everything about your swing about how the ball like it just doesn't happen if we all did this we would all be on you know

scratch golfers plan on tour um I think it's gonna go one or two ways though the problem is it's a nice

thought but is are they gonna think like is this gonna get as more head because now is like hey these guys are like really think I suck they're not having fun now I happen it's gonna put more pressure on him to be good if he gets the lesson so it could it could kind of backfire on you I think the sentiment is right it's a nice friend thing to do but you know your friend better than one else how is he gonna take this is he gonna think this is a good gift or is he gonna think

this is kind of an asshole gift that you guys gave him because you think he sucks it golf I mean are you guys real friends like do you point shit out about each other that's uncomfortable like you're getting fat you're going bald you suck it golf like are you those type of friends if you are yeah like would you get your fat friend and you had membership like it could go you know like it could go one or two ways I would have a couple of girlfriends that haven't loved that gift

“yeah but see that's you gotta be nicer than you have to be to your best friends that's a fact”

everyone knows that it's not breaking news yeah a sugar coat a little bit yeah yeah how do I look in this trash you can't really you have to you know there's really only one answer to that like I took an absolute not as good as you used to I took an absolute be to get my group chat like a bunch of strays over being fat it was like where the fuck did this guy wouldn't even say anything so everyone's in a while you know are you those kind of friends or are you not

that's the thing if you are don't even think about this get him a golf club get a golf uh what's it called get him a golf lesson and get a mean card to go with it like if that's if you guys actually are friends like that yeah he should want this he should be fine I don't know if you freak out that kind of gives you a deal there that is out you know he wants to keep showing

up because again this stuff is so important always hammer the fact that you guys get together

a couple of times a month get boys together from college play you know this is supposed to be about you guys spending time together and not letting life take over in a way or it's like man we never hang out anymore so he should care about this and if you know this isn't like an intervention man okay it's just hey do you want to get a little bit better at golf we all bought you a lesson to your birthday and the fact that all three guys are doing it and you have the birthday thing

and it's not coming out of nowhere I love the idea and if you react poorly that then you know maybe it's time to time to address feel like hey you also suck and you suck to be around

“so fix fix one of them yeah the last fix one you need to fix the other the last thing I'll”

say on that is like golf lesson is like I was trying to think of other things I know I have a couple in my life that like when I don't have that extra money or even when I do have that you they're in their 20s late 20s right probably not flush with cash it's not a thing you'll think about buying yourself like it's like in the you know when you think about everything you have to pay for and like you got to save money for those you know the nights out you know that cost 150

dollars out of nowhere when you plan to spend 70 like you're not like I'm going to pay a hundred

often so it's actually kind of a great thing to get for someone else you know it definitely is

“because I how many guys would be like hey yeah I went to the range like not a lesson”

going to the range and like I hit a hundred balls and like yeah I felt good after that you know

second half I'm like I'm striping down the middle it's like yeah you're hit the same shot a hundred times

“like and then you get on the club and you're the course and you're annoyed about why you can't”

replicate that it's like so yeah like that's the point of the lesson it's the sentiment is great it's awesome

but yeah you're gonna know your buddy but anyway else so I would say go cost more than you'd want

“to just frivolously throw away too I think so you know it's I think it's an actually really nice gift”
