Good evening and welcome to the Sleepy Bookshelf.

This season which is exclusively for our premium listeners, we will be reading The Fellow

Townsmen by Thomas Hardy.

Now we know our listeners are as unique as our novels and lucky for you.

Our bookshelf is varied with lots of different types of stories to lull you into a deep sleep. The following is a summary, to give you an idea of what to expect from this season.

First published in 1880, The Fellow Townsmen is a short story by Thomas Hardy, one of the

most beloved writers of Victorian England.

Best known for novels such as Tess of the Derbavils, far from the Madding crowd, and

due to the obscure. Hardy was renowned for his evocative descriptions of the English countryside and his thoughtful

explorations of love, regret and human nature.

Set in the historic city of Exeter, the Fellow Townsmen tells a story of two men whose lives become unexpectedly intertwined through friendship, rivalry, and a shared affection for the same woman.

As the years pass, chance encounters and difficult choices shape their destinies, leading

to moments of both happiness and heartbreak. In this story, like in many others, Hardy examines the ways in which ordinary lives can be altered by seemingly small decisions, and the enduring influence of the past. It combines gentle storytelling with emotional depth and a tale of friendship, forgiveness, and the unpredictable parts our lives can take.

We hope you will join us for this season, however, if this story isn't quite your cup of tea, feel free to explore the rest of the bookshelf.
