(upbeat music) - Hey guys, today's Oscar recap is brought to you by Booth's Mobile. This happened to everybody. This is a special episode on one of our IRL weeklys,
a little bit different today, because we are talking about the Oscars last night.
βThere's so many important moments to discuss,β
and even to discuss where IRL is connected. Like, we feel very strongly on this podcast
about a couple of people that were having an amazing
moment last night at the Oscars, so we shall discuss. - Do you remember, actually, when we interviewed Tiana Taylor Beck in 2023, you know, that was her, I think, when I heard her first, like her kind of like her acting debut in a way,
for a thousand and one, which is a great film. But you know, in our trailer, how you introduce her, is actually, you say, future Academy Award winning, Tiana Taylor. - Y'all, I mean, you're putting it out there.
I'm really like, you know what I mean? Man, a pressing thing for people. It happens, there's a clip of back in the day of me talking about people having babies together. It's like, it happened like three times.
So I was like, you guys gonna have a baby, and then they had a baby. It was like three times. I've put that on somebody and it happened. So yeah, she didn't win the Oscar,
but she did get the nomination, and she got all the glory of that moment. And it was just so much, you could just tell, she's like, France and around,
and these amazing outfits in her glory.
Like, she is, I don't know, she's just in the space that she's worked so hard to be.
βAnd I think winning the award sure is nice.β
But I think it's beyond winning the award. It's just like filling up and being in the space that you're supposed to be in life. I feel like she's arrived in that space with or without an Oscar.
She's arrived in the space that she's worked so hard to be. - You could totally tell how happy, I mean, I don't think there was anyone more happy than just to be at the Oscars than Tiana Taylor was. You know, her category came really early
on in the Oscars last night. And when she lost to Amy for weapons, that girl, the camera pants are here.
I used to see Tiana jumping on my up and down.
Oh my God, you thought for a second, did Tiana just win?
βThat's a way of showing, like, she just left.β
That's to me, that's exactly what I'm saying. It's like, she just happy to be in this moment. She's happy to be sitting next to Leo. Happy to be in this class. Happy to be making art that I'm sure she's super proud of.
And, you know, sitting next to her mom who's been on this journey with her whole life, I mean, she gave her her journey, right? But like, I don't know, just the whole thing. Seeing Michael be Jordan there with his mom,
they would look like a lot of love. And maybe it's just us, maybe we're biased a little bit. Well, like, I just felt like, it just felt like a lot of love was present yesterday. Why shouldn't Michael be Jordan when that award
sitting next to his mother? And he's been working actresses, he's a kid. And the fact that he said, I could feel everybody's wanting me to do well. Like, I felt that deep, like,
'cause I feel that sometimes, like, sometimes we'll do something and I'll meet people they be like, oh, oh, we don't want the pot. They be like, I love the pot so much.
βAnd I could feel that they wanted to do well,β
that they wanted me to do well. And that's such a great feeling. I can only imagine for him with, like, more than half the world rooting for him to have this moment, what that must feel like.
And then he wins it and he's sitting next to his mom. And then he goes to NNL Burger after, which is so good. And we're gonna love him enough, right? Just things that the whole thing was just really nice to see.
So yeah, it was special moment. But one of the things I wanted to talk about, we are gonna play some clips to refer to some of these episodes that we're talking about. But one of the things that I love seeing last night
was, you know, there's a new category for casting director. There is watching the cinematographer for the woman who won for Seniors. Yeah, I don't watching her win. You know, it really, and a lot of people in their speeches
refer to like filmmaking is not the star. It's not just Michael B. Jordan. Like, Michael B. Jordan, yes, he won an Oscar.
That's amazing, God bless him.
But if Ryan didn't write that script, if his wife didn't produce it with him, if that cinematographer didn't make it look the way it looked, like it really is. And it really takes a village is what I'm saying.
And to see some of those people in the village be acknowledged, that to me last night was super dope. I love seeing the people that, you know, make the village. And so there's a lot of that going on last night. And totally, and by the way, congratulations to Ryan
because he did win for best screenplay. He didn't win the director award, but he will, at some point, took Marty's course as he, I don't know how many films before he got one. Ryan's going to get one.
But I was glad that he won screenplay. And then some of the post interviews, me and the way he talks about his wife, can we just, before I get into what I have to say about that, do we have any clip from his episode that
refer to that at all? Yes. I got an amazing wife who's been with me knowing me a long time.
And it's always very honest to me.
It's very smart. So I keep her around and let her end on everything I'm doing. So she can kind of give me perspective. When I'm drowning in stress, she can tell me, yeah, you should be worried or not.
You trip me, you know, I'm sorry. Last to love about that clip, number one has also a fellow workaholic. I understand the concept behind that. I love hearing that for them.
But over this, the way that he respects an honest his wife, and even when people try to give him credit for that, you know, sometimes I hate to see this. But sometimes people be like, oh, it's not waste the way you talk about your wife.
βLike, if he's doing her a favor, you know what I'm saying?β
Like, oh, it's nice. You like your wife, reduce the movie. And people don't say that, but there is a tone. Sometimes that people say something that makes,
I don't know, it like diminishes her importance.
And he is always the first one to check that.
He's like, oh, it's not a favor. Oh, no, I'm grateful to have her be part of this film. Oh, this film doesn't happen without her. You know, I love the way he checks people in terms of the tone in which people refer to his wife.
- I tell you, I tell you a quick story of all of those things. You know, she just knows, man. But this movie, you know, big credit to her and her and say of her partner, man. But it wouldn't be what it was with all her, man.
And she did it all, pregnant and postpartum. Most of it, like, um, like I've seen her. She was, she was an every, she was an every post-production meeting, man. Like like like holding it down and dealing with all types
of stuff, you know, um, the only I could see, we took the film on a roll, all over the world while she was out there here, y'all saw her, man. I wasn't easy. And then it hasn't stopped, you know.
I mean, all of this since, you know, our, our baby is seven months old. No, and she, and she, and she, and as good as a producer, she is, she even better mom.
So, so to see her do all this is crazy.
But, but, but, but, but, but, but, I'm just, I'm just leave y'all on one insight into her brilliance, man. Like, like, we were dealing with some stuff at home. And, and two family members were at, kind of, at each other's throws, about, about, about some things.
Um, and I, and I did what I did, I've been to it for like 40 minutes to where I bought, you know, who did what, and why, why we got to do this this for who. And, and, and, and she took a deep breath when I got done in Vin, and her, and her crazy, crazy way.
And she says, you know, sometimes it doesn't matter who's right.
βWhat matters is that people know that the other person carries the ball.β
And I, and I, and I had, you know, I'm a writer. I heard a lot of words, I listen to you about words at a time. I live with this woman for a long time.
And I never heard those words put together like that in that context.
And I was, I was like, God damn, man, you want to win. Um, and I, and I, and I, and I, and I, and I, and I, and I thought like, one of one for back in there, you know, you know, you know, Sam, um, um, and all the stuff. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, so, so, so, so, so, so, so look, yo.
Hey, so, um, I see all the comments, everybody's like, I pray for us all the fun, this like, well, so, and then that's a dope thing about Ryan, it's like he, he pays attention to the detail of, he's such a truth teller. Like, you know what I'm saying?
That even like a false tone about his wife, he's going to check that fast. And I just appreciate that so much.
βAnd I think that's what makes him a phenomenal storyteller is this like,β
the music's always going to be the right music.
The tone, the laugh, the way you ask the question about my wife, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, we're going to get there, right? Because, you know, sometimes it's a little thing. So, our things are framed, and I just appreciate that about him so much. One of the reasons why not only is he, one of my favorite filmmakers,
but I just think he's super dope as a human being. I don't know his wife, I've never met her, but I'm like her, if I don't know what I'm saying. Actually, for this love, I'm as a couple, and it's just so nice to see that type of love. You know what I'm saying?
And that type of work relationship, too, by the way, is because he'll tell you himself that that movie wasn't what it was without her on it. So, that was really nice to see. And then also a quick little clip of Michael B. Jordan at In and Out Burger, after the awards.
[crowd cheering] [crowd cheering] Now, back to Zachos, back to Zachos, back to Zachos, back to Zachos. [crowd cheering] [crowd cheering]
[crowd cheering] [crowd cheering] [crowd cheering] [crowd cheering] The part in his speech, where he says to his kids,
"I'm sorry that this is causing us to be, you know, spent so much time away from you, but the one thing I hope when I'm on and gone is that I leave you with good memories." [crowd cheering] I was whipping. [crowd cheering]
I was so emotional. What was wrong with us? I was so emotional. I mean, because it was actually, it was so much genuine love happening. Yeah, I don't know.
It was just, yeah, I don't know. What do you think? Why are we going to say?
βI think you can relate when you put that much,β
when you really care and love about your work that you do. You know how much it takes to make something good, to make something great. Yes. I'm Clayton Nackard, and in 2022,
I was the lead of ABC's The Bachelor. Unfortunately, it didn't go according to plan.
He became the first bachelor to ever have his final rose rejected.
The internet turned on him. If I could press a button and rewind it all, I would. But what happened to Clayton after the show?
Made even bigger headlines.
It began as a one-night stand, and ended in a courtroom, with Clayton at the center of a very strange paternity scandal. The media is here. This case has gone viral. The dating contract.
Agreed to date me, but I'm also suing you. We're in such work. This is unlike anything I've ever seen before. I'm Stephanie Young. This is Love Trapped.

The people with some was up. It's Quest Love.
So recently, I had the incredible opportunity to have a real conversation
with actors and producer Jamie Lee Curtis, ahead of the release of our new thriller series, Scar Petta.
βI can honestly say I've never done an interview like that before,β
you know, at one point I set my laptop down, and we just started chatting as old friends, recent Oscar recipient. So we have some commonality there. I predict that by the way.
And you said these words to me, dust off your mantle. Yes. And I looked at you and I said, what?
And you said dust off your mantle. And then I left, and that was it. And then when all of that happened, I remember the next morning, I think I wanted to write you and go,

By the way, speaking of making things, I posted a clip that I finally, that I shadowed on my boy's scene and came to join you on the set of Man on fire. So I posted this thing on Instagram that I have secretly been spending your film making for the past. I don't know, I feel like since hopefully I'm listening.
Doing masterclasses, doing lessons, shadowing people. Asking a lot of questions, doing research, reading books, all that. Brittany, Brittany too. Brittany's been on this journey with me on the two of us. And so I shared a post of how I was able to follow Steven in Mexico City on the set of Man on fire,
which is getting ready to come out, which I'm very excited to see. But I was there when he was directing an episode in Mexico City.
Steven, who was an amazing filmmaker, also friends with, not only is he frien...
Ryan, I believe, kind of put them on to create too, because Ryan did create one.
βSteven did create two while I believe Ryan was doing a black Panther.β
Anyway, I say that's all that to say. Ryan, who grew up with the USC? Steven, cable junior with the USC. The person who won best documentary last night, USC films do it. I don't know what we got to do.
I don't know if it's like an online program or something, but whatever they're doing at the film school at USC, probably because you churn it them out over there. But yeah, they'll make it an interesting, beautiful, I don't know, graft. In and out after this Oscars that in and out stock is up, a USC is we have flooded with applicants for sure. That was happening.
You know, as a sure, as a sure. Yeah, it was a great game. What else, Tiana Taylor, I know we talked about her not winning machine.
She looked incredible, she had an amazing night.
I'm certain I love seeing her there with her mom as women in filmmaking for sure. Autumn winning best cinematography for being the first woman to ever win in that category. And when she tells all the women in the audience, she's like, if you're a woman, stop. Oh, we're so good. That's so good.
And I'm so glad that the, because you know, sometimes people call it to the audience. And they're like, you'll put your hands together or whatever. And people don't oblige or like, whatever, but when they zoom out the camera to show everyone standing up your line. Dang.
βThat's how many women are part of this industry and without their influence.β
Like, and they often go unnoticed. They often usually harm even the, even the woman who won for wardrobe. I was thinking about my friend Tiffany, shout out to tip the stylist, you know, she'd been doing this for years for all types of shows and films and projects. And she, she don't get that type of recognition, but she'd be right next to the people making films.
And I was watching the woman who didn't win for wardrobe. I think it was for Frankenstein. Yeah, it was spectacular. Frankenstein wardrobe is spectacular. Yeah, so for that, for her or, and for all, can you imagine my friend Tiffany for all of the, the many, many women behind the scenes that have been working at this 10, 20, 30 years to finally be recognized as.
It's pretty, I mean, all that calls for water works. All of that was very emotional. Yeah, I love seeing you. More 100%.
βI think overall, overall theme for it is like.β
Thanks a village. Well, yes, of course, that takes the village. But also doing things without recognition, like still maintaining motivation throughout it without getting like, you know, that pet on the back because they're, like, even after Oscar after the board win, those women are still going to go back and, you know, do the same great level of work.
Some, and some people are there and they're never going to get it at all.
So the Oscars is a nice, but it doesn't, I'm going to be honest. Even in the, normally you watch the Oscars and you say the big celebrity wins the best, or that's supporting at the best, whatever. And everybody's like those are the moments. I don't feel like those were the moments this year.
I feel like the moment for the people that were behind the camera, the people that, don't agree with the moments that I got most emotional when she went on a, who's been a cinematographer for, I don't know how many years makes the whole, all the women in the room stand up or the women like I said, who won best wardrobe or just any of those moments, like, or the, the agents.
I feel like there was a moment with, with the, with agents and just all the, the blasting directors, yeah, an casting director who, you know, people spend their whole life hours loosely moves, like, and built a craft, a valuable craft that sits quietly kind of in the shadows while these big productions are made, and then the actor goes and gets the spotlight and gets the awards,
but it's, it's the people behind the scenes, it's the village. And to me, that those moments last night were the most special moments at the Oscars. Those are the ones that got me a little watery. I'd more than anything.
And then of course, Ryan, it's amazing.
I don't forever cry for them. But, yeah, well, I hope we see more of that. I think that was super dope. And the theme of, it takes a village, but it's also, like, what God has for you, like, that timeline is way above you.
Like, he's already, whoever up there, whatever you believe in,
now already has it figured out.
βLike, you're taking a tiana, who has been working, so she was a teenager,β
a baby, she goes from music artists to quitting music to picking up a camera herself and creating directing all the way to now. And, you know, now she's getting that recognition. And then, even a Michael B. Jordan, who started off when he was also a kid from going from the wire, right?
So now he finally go up for commercials and work together as a team.
Even that, even the friendship of these two men, at the awards together, having that grand moment together, that's a fruitful station after Creed, after Black Panther, to be here during sinners. I mean, it's really like, come on, this is pretty spectacular stuff.
And then, and then, for them to be real ones, let's be honest, you know, and I'm saying, like, no, seriously, like, it's not a small thing. And I think for me, that's more than half of the joy. That's a real one right there, man, look at that.
That to me is the most inspiring part of it, because there have been people's successful in Hollywood. There have been people who have broke boundaries and knocked doors down in that school, but like to be a real one, and do it to me as a different level of success.
To maintain who you are, where you from, the people you came up with, your beliefs, your vision, your art, your storytelling is so pure
and honest, and then you do it that way on those circumstances,
that to me is like, that's the most inspiring it could get. And so, Marien Cool goes concerned.
βThat's how that's, that's what I feel happened.β
And like, too, and Mike too, he's so real that he won't even be on the voting committee committee for the Oscars, because he's like, no, I don't want to, I was so bad judging my, my peers aren't. No, he, and trying to tell you, he is a real one.
We are going to start the rank who will pay you club here at the end, and work me in the viral while I guess. And by the way, guys, if you have not watched this episode, please go back. It was before sinners.
Was it right before sinners? It was way before sinners, actually. We were working on sinners, right? He was like working on it right again. But, oh, yeah, he was doing the project with,
but it's just, it's an insight into him as a human, like, and as a creative. And I, I really love that episode. And now granted, we could be biased, because we are, like I said, we do fancy film, and we aspire to be filmmakers, and we're in that creative learning space right now.
And so, maybe we're a little biased, but I just think there's so much to learn about that. And so, I'm the way he navigates to his world. And he's just super dope. And, like I said, a real one.
So definitely worth an episode worth watching at the end of the party. Also, I highly recommend one of Bernie's favorite episodes, ever on IRL podcast. See on it, Taylor. Right?
I don't want to miss you. You're a favorite one. It's definitely one of mine too.
More you, whenever everybody asks you always refer to that one.
Yeah, because I always appreciate, like, if you want to glimpse of it, just watch the trailer on that. On the Angie Martinez IRL page, because you can go out with a girl.
Let's go out with both their trailers. So, this episode. No, there is one of them. Yeah, because we played. It's like, we take time on those trailers for the party.
Like, after the episode, I'm like, what do we learn from them? What do we talk about? And then we make a trailer based on that. And so, it's the, it's the what we think is in the episode.
And it's just a sample. It's a tiny, as little sample ever. But I'll give you both of those on the end of this, so you can do it. So you can check those episodes out.
Anyway, there's also a new episode. Grant of not Oscars related. Well, June Ambrose was at the Oscar party. Look at fabulous. The June Ambrose, our past episode.
And this beautiful story is from June to about learning to deal with grief, episodes in her mom. She shares the story about J and B. And we don't really get to hear a lot of intimate stories about J and B in the way she, the way she shared it.
That I thought were pretty great. Anyway, not the episode. We can get to check out that just got all right. So as promised, I'm going to leave you with these two trailers. So it's two episodes that you can check out as it relates to the Oscars.
But feel free to check out whatever episode you like. Just make sure you subscribe and tell a friend. And I'll be back on Wednesday with a new episode. I hope you'll check that out. Thank you for those mobile.
Thank you, great. And we'll catch you soon.
βIf it feels like a real moment, doesn't it feel like that?β
Yeah, it definitely feels like the moment.
He'll just Academy Award winning Tiana Taylor.
Us being strong woman is not about choice. You know what I'm saying?
βSo it's just like to go to set 12 hours a day and be able to just like pourβ
out and cry out loud. Every single we most used in an movie was real. What's on your mind? I feel like something's on your mind right now. You okay?
Yeah. You just went somewhere. Oh no. Isn't weird thing?
This something I feel like we're talking about a lot of shit that I never really talk about.
You know, being on the front end of things from 15. Nobody ever really got to see my struggle. This is Tiana Taylor in real life. What did you be trying to survive, man? It'd be able to sleep at night.
I grew up loving movies. Not knowing that I would eventually like discover a passion for making. You know what I'm saying? You were so intentioned. Like so present.
You know what I'm saying?
βAnd I don't know if that was just who he was or what he was dealing with.β
Hollywood is not competitive. No, it's a lot. Really? Yeah. Yeah.
Just powering and finding out what you love.
Like I found what I loved in the roundabout way. I thank God. I was like open to it. Hey, guys, thanks for watching. Make sure you subscribe.
