Officials in Iran say this weekend that the Strait of Hormous will never fully reopen
“until the U.S. agrees to a number of demands, including the removal of U.S. troops from”
the Middle East. Mark Esper served as defense secretary during President Trump's first term. He says Iran doesn't understand what's happening right now. This is having global impacts, so we should motorize it, motorize it, get our Asian allies and board our European allies, others around the world, and really put economic
pressure on this country and slowly strangle it until they come back to the negotiation table in a serious way. Esper was speaking on ABC's this week. At least eight people are dead and several more wounded in weekend to air attacks between Russia and Ukraine.
As NPR's Charles Mames reports from Moscow, the casualties come as both sides have increased attacks on civilian infrastructure. For the past month, Ukraine has used long-range drones to strike energy in commercial logistics centers in Russia, part of an attempt to bring the war home to Russians in a way Ukrainians have experienced for more than four years.
Ukraine's President Vladimir Zelensky says the campaign is successfully drained Russia of millions of dollars. It could have otherwise put towards the war effort. Yet Russia's intensified its own attacks, taking advantage of Ukraine's dwindling air defenses with ballistic missile strikes.
That includes in the Black Sea region, where attacks have brought shipments of Ukraine's
“key export grain to a virtual standstill raising concerns of a global food shortage, come”
winter. Charles Mames and PR News, Moscow. Wildfires have led to evacuations throughout Western portions of the U.S. and Canada this weekend. And Paris Shondalee's duster has more on our story.
Evacuation orders have been issued across Western parts of the U.S. and southwest Canada as extremely hot and dry conditions fueled the spread of wildfires in the region. In Utah, officials say close to a dozen active wildfires have scorched more than 300,000 acres as of Sunday evening. Fire officials say two helicopter pilots died on Friday while battling a wildfire in the
state that has burned over 100,000 acres. The National Interagency Fire Center says firefighters are working to contain more than 90 large wildfires across the U.S. The center also says more than 180 new fires, including eight large ones, have been reported nationwide since Saturday.
A state of emergency has also been declared in Canada's British Columbia Province, where more than 100 wildfires are burning, Shondalee's duster and PR news. The Coast Guard says the operator of a boat that capsized to New York Harbor this weekend and killed a mother and her daughter will face criminal charges. The speedbook overturned Saturday night near Liberty Island, which is the home of the Statue
of Liberty. All of people were rescued after that accident, but the 27-year-old mother, along with her five-month-old daughter, were killed. The 46-year-old operator now faces 13 charges of reckless endangerments. You're listening to NPR news.
Typhoon Dolphin is landed in China after sweeping through Japan's Okinawa Prefecture. It hit China's East Coast in the province of Jajang, and Pierre's Jennifer Pack is there and has this report. I'm about 120 miles west from the Yuan Coast where Typhoon Dolphin landed late this afternoon. And the rain here has been non-stop.
The Typhoon also brought strong winds, triggering flood warnings across eastern China,
at least a million people have been evacuated from their homes in high-risk areas.
State broadcaster CCTV reports some train services were suspended, and over 1,700 flights were cancelled in multiple cities. One is National Meteorological Center has issued a red alert for torrential rains over the next couple of days, with Jajang expected to be hit the hardest. Syria and Russia have agreed to end Moscow's use of two strategic Mediterranean coastal bases. Russia had used those bases as military outposts. Syria will now take back control of both of those bases and turn them into joint training centers that will include Russian forces.
