I'm David Rothkopf. I'm joined by Riley Fessler. I'm going to talk about what's going on in the world today. And who's going to start us off? I'll get things going.
After being berated by President Donald Trump for opposing the war on Iran. Senate Republicans rejected a symbolic war powers resolution in a late night vote meant to appease him. The measure failed after Republican senators Bill Cassidy and Rand Paul altered their positions, delivering an outcome of its Senate Majority Leader John Thun. Reporting to pleased the president, which is of course all that matters.
But it's all that matters because he's our king bow down to our king, hail Great King, who would never lead us astray.
Sorry. Go on. That's about it. Despite this concession, the episode highlights deepening friction between Trump and Senate Republicans. ahead of the midterms exacerbated by Trump stong a bipartisan housing bill to demand a proof of citizenship.
Voting law, which I will get into in a later story. Good. Well, he should get into that later story. The reality is that they were all like ready to go up there and sign this bill because then they thought, hey, at least we'll have one thing that we've done for the people. And he he trashed that in order to support something that nobody thinks is going to actually happen. As far as this change on the war powers.
“It's really shameful and I just to everybody out there take names, remember them.”
These people are supporting illegal wars wars that cost billions wars that take food out of babies mouths wars that kill people. There it's it's just shameful and it also weakens the United States and underminds are interest underminds are alliances underminds are allies. And why do they do it? Why do they do it if it's not the US interest? Why do they do it if it's not good for US national security? Why do they do it if it runs contrary to the oath of office they took. They do it because they're afraid that the madman in the White House is going to make their lives a little uncomfortable.
And they're in the Senate where they're supposed to be making millions of dollars and people are supposed to respect them and call them senator and never never make their lives uncomfortable.
Sad sad sad and frankly I wish I could just take the Congress of the United States and treat it like you might and etchiskech where you sort of shake it a little bit. Get a clean state slate and start over again when I suppose an etchiskech or references over your heads because you guys are just too young. I had an etchiskech. Yeah, I'm not that young. Well, you are, but I didn't know that they even still made etchiskechis and would like. I mean, etchiskech is a really frustrating toy. Like you can't make a curve bind it ends up all being like little steps and I know there people out there spend all their days and then they can make a curve line but nobody else can.
And like how much fun is that that you can actually use it to draw anything. I don't know. Was it fun for you guys? No, it's not fun for anybody. It's fucking torture. It's a way to torture your kids. I'm anti etchiskech. The way toys should be torture. Yeah, that's great. That's great. All right. Go on. Now there's a really grim story. So I shouldn't be polite here. Well, I'm going to follow up with something a little fun.
You are treat.
I thought we were going to talk about the earthquake in Venezuela, but okay. Go on.
“We're going to treat ourselves first. Less than two weeks after becoming the world's first trillion air following SpaceX's blockbuster public debut Elon Musk lost his 13 figure status as his net worth fell to 957 billion on Tuesday.”
The rapid reversal was fueled by a broader technology of stock sell off driven by investor skepticism over AI infrastructure cost was triggered a 30% plunge in SpaceX shares on their mid-June peak.
Despite losing an estimated 240 billion in a single day, Musk remains the world's wealthiest person and could easily regain his trillionaires status with a 6% recovery in SpaceX stock.
I remember what I lost like $2.40 and I was real upset about it. But $2.40 to me is more than $240 billion to him. So, well, look, I wouldn't like break out the champagne and celebrate the downfall of Elon Musk when his net worth is at $957 billion, which is only about three times what it was a couple of years ago. Particularly because the sell-off of big tech stocks is not over. There are a lot of artificial factors that are propping up the stocks called the Meg 7, the Magnificent 7, the 7 big tech stocks and related stocks like SpaceX that I don't think are sustainable.
“And if I had to pick one story, I'm worried about for the later part of this year that isn't the end of democracy in the United States because I'm worried about that one.”
Or isn't another war created by Trump because I'm worried about that one.
It would be that there is going to be a big financial markets correction crisis. Something banned. That is just seems like it's out there looming. It's too many things that are too overvalued. Are we in any way supposed to be giving financial advice here? No. Don't take our financial advice. Just telling you what I'm thinking.
“Well, I've unfortunately got the earth quakes story. Twain earth quakes, the worst to hit Venezuela in nearly 60 years have devastated the countries in northern states, leaving at least 164 people dead in nearly 1000 injured.”
The disasters caused widespread structural collapse and recovery efforts are severely hindered by Venezuela's hollowed out rescue services which have deteriorated infrastructure and ongoing economic crisis. During just six months after US military rate, Austin Nicholas Maduro, the catastrophe intensifies the political scrutiny facing a president del C Rodriguez as international aid teams have begun to arrive. Yeah, these are the most preliminary numbers. If any of you have seen the pictures. It's devastating. There were two earthquakes and big earthquakes and rapid succession. And lots of buildings were destroyed. Pancake people trapped in them.
There are some credible estimates that the death toll could rise to over 10,000 several that suggested to go higher still than that. And, you know, this is one of those kinds of major disasters that caused the world to step in. In the past, one of the organizations that might have been helpful is of course US, AID, which no longer exists. And a lot of the mechanisms the US might have mobilized to help. Don't even exist anymore. Badly understaffed or badly underfunded. And we know this because, you know, Trump's pushing a new bill to the Congress that includes funding down fight Ebola because he cut the funding down fight Ebola.
And you might say, well, why should we be responsible for rebuilding Venezuela, aren't they, you know, country that we've had an adversary relationship with? Well, you know, you break it, you own it. Trump went in, he took over, he got rid of the head of state of the country and has been, you know, saying that he is really in charge of Venezuela now. And so there's going to be real test of what is that me does the US have to step in Trump has said they would would we with what how what is it going to take away from.
And, you know, what is the impact of a slow response going to be on the gover...
These are all things for weeks and months ahead right now prayers for the people who are trapped in these buildings for their families for the people who are suffering great loss.
“And I do hope that some combination of organizations from the around the world are able to step in and help these people at a moment when they surely need it.”

As I serve as its detention capacity, under the Trump administration, role emergency medical services across the country are facing immense strain due to a sharp rise in 911 calls from local detention centers. Public records revealed that understaffed role EMS crews already stretched thin by long drives to hospitals are frequently tasked with handling urgent medical needs. Like chest pain, assault and pepper spray exposure for expanding detainee populations. Compounding a burden of these small communities, local officials and states like Pennsylvania and Georgia report that ice has failed to compensate their cashstrap emergency services for these responses.
And the article also said that in some of these communities, it's taking up to 2.5 hours for ambulances to get to detention centers. To respond to the 911 call and because they have so few ambulances, it's also taking those ambulances out of commission for hours making other calls even more delayed. It's a kind of perfect storm of bad Trump policies. Where those comes in cuts funding hurts rural hospitals, people are suffering as a result of that. Then these detention centers are built.
They have any main conditions. Scores of people suffer and die. They have medical needs. They take away from the already depleted medical needs that compounds the suffering in both areas. And compounds the suffering for the rural compounds the suffering for the people in the detention centers.
It's bad governance and just to tie it back to other stories.
“Let's remember that Elon Musk played a huge role in pushing the kind of cuts through those that have led to this.”
Now, of course, Steven Miller and the ice brigades that would kind of crazy cruel white supremacist element of this government. They also bear responsibility and trump a bear's responsibility and the Republicans that have gone along with all this bear responsibility.
But, you know, when you're in emergency and you're in detention center and yo...
But, the blame game doesn't matter.
“You just want care and the care isn't coming.”
Our government's broken folks and it's not just abstract. It's not just politics. It's lives being lost. It's people suffering. Well, to wrap things up, President Donald Trump has stalled the bipartisan at 21st century road to housing act by canceling its signing ceremony.
Conditioning his signature on Congress passing a separate proof of citizenship voting bill this save America act. The comprehensive legislation aims to combat the housing affordability crisis by reducing federal regulations, boosting the supply of affordable starter homes and expanding a rental assistance.
While the delay postpones a critical construction projects, the bill passed with veto proof majorities in both chambers and speaker Mike Johnson remains.
The president will eventually sign it. Mike Johnson, what a pillar of strength he is. This is deeply frustrating for everybody in the Congress, but also for people out there who recognize we have a housing crisis. And you gotta believe it's a big housing crisis if it's enough to create veto proof majorities in the house and the Senate in support of taking some kind of action.
“Why would Trump do this? Why would he take a feather out of his own cap? Why would he not have a moment that he can crow about when he has so many other crises, you know, going on simultaneously now?”
Well, there's only one reason.
He is obsessed with cheating in the November elections. He is obsessed with the fact that the Democrats look likely to win in the Senate and the House and his majorities will go. And the world in which a Mike Johnson says he has to everything or Senate Republicans can be brow beaten into changing their views on matters of principle will be over. And investigations will follow, investigations into widespread corruption, investigations into his family, investigations into him, investigations into the Epstein files, investigations into malfeasance throughout the U.S. government, into his cabinet.
And those investigations are necessary because this is the least transparent government in history. It's the most corrupt government in history. It is violating laws left and right allocating funds illegally, shifting funds from one area to another illegally, lining the president's pockets illegally. And he knows that even with the immunity the Supreme Court has given him, this kind of shift puts him at risk, his family at risk, his legacy, such as it is at risk, the people who support him at risk.
And you know, I take this decision to postpone this signing as a real serious warning. This is a red flashing lights moment, because this is the president saying, I will do nothing unless you let me cheat. I have no higher priority than undermining democracy in America undermining the right of people to express themselves at the ballot box.
“It's deeply worrisome. And I think we need to see it in that fight. Anyway, we've got more for you here coming along today in tomorrow.”
This week, I think words matter is actually being recorded tomorrow Friday morning, so if you're looking for it on the Thursday won't get it, but Norman, I will do it tomorrow morning. We've got a still a consciousness tomorrow. We did a very, very interesting deep state radio yesterday focused on the intelligence community with a real leader from the intelligence community was chilling. Strongly urgent to listen to it. And it needs to know the substact that we do where it's you know, I write and and where we have the podcasts that I'm hosting one on one expert conversations.
In the need to know podcasts, I did do a in-depth analysis of the implications of the elections this week in New York and elsewhere and what the meaning is behind some of the progressive victories that have some people unsettled.
They don't have me unsettled.
So I strongly encourage you to go to need to know if you want to read that. And we'll see you around until then. Thanks, Riley. Thanks, man. Thanks, everybody. Bye bye.
