I'm David Rothkoff, I'm joined by Riley Fessor and Menestine as we are every week, where at the beginning of a new week and men is going to kick us off with a story.

Iran has appointed most of our community as its new supreme leader, following the death of his father, Ali Kamini, who was killed in US, Israeli strikes along with other top regime officials.

Although most of our community has never held formal government office, he previously wielded significant behind the scene's influence,

and has been considered a potential successor for years. His appointment may be controversial inside Iran because it could appear like a hereditary transfer of power, even as the country faces major pressure from the United States and Israel.

β€œLook, you know, this Iran thing is a giant mess. I think if most people waking up this morning or waking up to a hundred-dollar barrel oil”

and waking up to markets plummeting and while there are threats from the United States that we are going to potentially use troops on the ground,

Secretary of Defense, Hague Seth has reiterated that threat. There is also reports of real skepticism on the part of countries worldwide that the United States is going to be able to achieve regime change that it may take a long time, and that indeed, if it takes a couple of months, the global economy may actually be sent into a recession. And I am sure those concerns are being felt in the White House. They're being heard in the White House. The whole strategy of Trump, and I use the term strategy loosely,

of unleashing force briefly in order to produce major changes, looks extremely unlikely to work. And so, you know, this appointment of a leader who was expected, frankly, by many to be the leader in any case, not only does not suggest that Trump is moving towards regime change, it also suggests that hardliners in Iran have gained strength as a result of this, and it will make it more difficult to deal with Iran, not less difficult.

β€œIf the economic indicators continue to flash red, I think you can expect Trump to pull back.”

There's probably 50/50 possibility that he will continue in the more destructive paths simply because he doesn't take advice. And so the world holds its breath right now as to whether the United States is going to do something wildly destructive there. The U.S. District Court Judge ruled that Carrie Lake acted unlawfully while leading the U.S. agency for global media, declaring her appointment invalid and her past administrative actions null and void. This decision effectively reverses Lake's sweeping efforts to dismantle the voice of America, which included laying off over 1,000 employees,

and drastically reducing the network's multi-language broadcasts. The court found that Lake lacked the statutory and constitution authority to serve as acting CEO, noting a significant absence of official appointment documentation to justify her de facto control.

Yeah, I mean, this is good news because what she did was incredibly destructive.

Now will the administration fight it? Will they appeal this? Who knows?

Carrie Lake was always just a puppet for Trump and Trump failed to realize the value in all of these agencies.

β€œI think there's a subtext here, whether it's the story of Iran, the story of dealing with these agencies, the story of HHS, the story of the trade tariffs that were illegal and so forth.”

And, you know, pick your agency, the story is the same. And that is, you've got some people with extremist views. We get a lot of attention for that. You've got Trump, you know, belligerent, egotistical, corrupt, narcissistic. But, you know, there's something else going on here. And that's incompetent. The people who are running the United States government are inept. They don't do their jobs very well. Whether they're economic jobs, whether they're environmental jobs, whether they're healthcare jobs, whether they're transportation jobs, whether they're military jobs.

Just straight down the line. They're bad at what they do. And the world is seeing that, you know, writ large.

β€œIt's not new. Not new. Remember, you know, I just saw some data yesterday about COVID.”

The United States lost twice as many people, 1.3 or 4 million people, to COVID as any other country on earth.

That was because it's not because we're sort of strangely vulnerable to the virus. It's because Trump handled this crisis profoundly incompetently. And so, you know, it's easy to get focused on a lot of the inflammatory things. But let's not lose sight of the fact that nobody is in a senior position in this government ought to be in that position. President Trump said he will refuse to sign any legislation until Congress passes the Save America Act,

β€œwhich will require proof of citizenship to register to vote and make major changes to voting rules.”

The bill faces strong opposition in the Senate, where Democrats led by Chuck Schumer say it could disenfranchise millions, while Republicans debate how to overcome the 60 vote threshold. Trump's stance raises the risk of legislative gridlock and could complicate efforts to avoid a government shutdown, tied to funding for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Yeah, it's terrible bill.

It literally tens of millions of Americans would be disenfranchised or would have to go out and find new ways to prove their citizenship in order to vote. It's clearly a voter suppression bill, and the reason it's Trump's drop priority is that he knows that unless he does something incredibly wrong, and unless he does something incredibly intrusive into the voting process, that he's going to lose big time, on all the special elections that have taken place since Trump took office, Democrats are up 13 percent over how they performed before.

They're winning in special election after special election, in the generic polling Democrats are way up over Republicans.

In some cases, in some groups with Hispanics, with independence, by numbers we've never seen before.

And so this is kind of Trump's voter suppression hail merit, and it needs to be defeated. It's a really, really ugly bill. I'm Theresa and my experience in all entrepreneurs starts a choppy fight against you. I admit that choppy fight is already the first day, and the fight has to do with no problem. I have a lot of problems, but the fight is not a step away.

I have the feeling that choppy fight is a fight against the enemy, everything is super integrated and dangerous, and the time and the money that I can't even invest in others. For all of you, in Waksthum. Now, let's test the choppy fight.de.

At the shield of the America's summit in Florida, President Trump promoted a ...

aimed dismantling drug cartels and securing borders.

β€œDuring his remarks, Trump touted the recent capture of President Nicholas Maduro of Venezuela,”

an issued a stern warning that similar regime change could soon be coming to Cuba. The President also formally launched the America's counter cartel coalition and agreement authorizing the use of lethal military force against transnational criminal organizations. Yeah, I mean, this is crazy. This is just crazy.

I mean, first of all, shield of the America's does sound directly out of a Marvel or DC comic book.

Secondly, the idea that every drug dealer is now a terrorist because that lets us go and use different kinds of force against them is probably illegal. I mean, you know, what we have done here, as we have essentially said, these things that are normally resolved via legal channels or arrests, court cases, trials, judgments,

β€œcan now be solved by the military coming in and just killing everybody with no due process. That's what happened with the speed boats. That's what happened in the case of snatching Maduro.”

And then, you know, on top of all of this, I'd just like to throw in the fact that Trump saying, "Oh, I'm going to topple the regime in Cuba." While he's trying to topple the regime in Iran, shortly after he's toppled the regime in Venezuela, in the heels of saying that he wants to seize Greenland. On the heels of saying, "Maybe Canada should be a state." On the heels of saying, "Maybe we should take over Panama." I mean, this is beyond, you know, bond villain behavior. This is just insanity. The president of the United States, in nobody's worldview, gets to pick and choose who runs other countries.

β€œHe doesn't get to impose his will, even on countries with bad governments. There is no justification for this. It's wrong.”

I wrote a piece about this, add my sub-stack over the weekend, need to know. I would add, I was incredibly grateful to Heather Cox Richardson, who then quoted it in her sub-stack letters from an American, which is sort of one of the leading sub-stacks out there. And it has just gotten unbelievable response. More response than any piece I've ever written on sub-stack in a couple of years, I've been doing sub-stack or almost two years. And I encourage you to go read it. If you like it, subscribe to the sub-stack which has grown a lot, even just this weekend.

But I do talk about the fact that what's going on here is a particular kind of madness that we've never seen before.

A keen Jeffrey said he has not decided whether to support additional Pentagon funding or related to the war in Iran, saying Congress will consider it only if the Trump administration formally requested. Jeffrey's argued that the administration has not yet provided a convincing justification for the conflict, despite the Pentagon already receiving a record 901 billion dollar budget through the National Defense Authorization Act. Everything Congress to halt U.S. military actions through war powers resolutions failed, though a majority of Democrats supported the measure while a few Republicans broke with their party to vote for it.

Let me try to sum this up for you. No, no, no, no, no, no. I came Jeffrey's response was classic Dem leadership. Dems are so insecure about their security bonafides that they don't ever want to oppose anything that could have somebody saying, oh, it's weak not to do this totally wrong here. It's strong not to fund an illegal war. It's strong not to fund an award that is going to send the entire Middle East into chaos. It's strong not to fund a war that alienates our allies. It's strong not to fund a war that could trigger a global recession and hurt American lives. It is strong not to fund a war that will put Americans at risk for no reason.

You respect the military by using the military for the purposes for which the military exists under the laws of this country. You do not respect them by treating them like cannon fodder for illegal wars triggered by the impulses of an out of control rogue president.

So, you know, that was just me extemporaneously folks and I'm not a member of...

Once again disappointed. Well, we've got the weekend of us. We've got lots of podcasts coming free this week covering this kind of thing updating you out the Iran war updating you on the politics of it here at home updating you on a bunch of related stories.
