we've had a repeat winner of the Tour de France, Father de X-Wift.

She won three stages out of nine, incredible.

(upbeat music) - Here we are. Welcome back everybody, the move podcast course. I'm joined by Mari and Alley. Talking about stage nine, the final stage.

A lot to talk about, a lot to reflect upon. I think what was, well, was certainly shaping up to be an exciting Tour de France fan. Did me ballerina, a different idea. - What a race.

- What a race. - Just a master class, master class. - Absolutely, master class. - Of course also joined by Mel Hinkeppie. Mel, what tell us what we did today?

- Hey, Lance, just do your life. - Oh, come on. (laughs) - Stage nine, from niece, to niece, niece, to niece. - Yeah, when it's not that exciting, when you know in terms of the niece to niece,

like she had to add a little bit, right? - Do you do the leg? - When you responded.

“- Well, yeah, 'cause it's an inside joke,”

but when George and her first started dating,

English was just not great. And then it started to get a little better, and a little better. And we were of course all such great friends, and then her English was getting to a place where,

like, "All right, I can give this girl a little grief, "just kind of river a little bit." But still not good enough her English to come back with something. So she, you would see her, she'd get,

she'd get so frustrated. And then one day she goes, "Loss, just do your life." (laughs) And I go, "What, excuse me? "No, I will, I promise."

(laughs) I was like, "Do your life, that's your comeback." Like, "Girl, I love it." - I mean, I love it, too. And it's become, I don't know.

- It should be a mantra. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. It should be a T-shirt. - Oh, next year that I can. - We're 25 years into this thing,

and it's still to this day, you know, she'll, you know, it's most of the perfect time, and do your life. And like, and I'm 25 years later, I'm like, "Yep, I am." - Well, Denny did her life.

- Denny, I've already said, "Complete Masterclass." Kind of puts all of the, you know, I hate to say controversy, but it was. It was controversial yesterday at the finish. They carried on the controversy into today.

You even saw, early in the stage. - Yes. - We're not in the group, but these cameras, kids,

they're always on, you caught a little dialogue

between her and Cassia, and then the finger. - Oh, wow. I was like, "Ooh, I would love to be right there "and hearing what is happening." But Denny ballerian just, yeah, I mean,

second tour, third stage win of this tour. - So impressed. - Yeah, quickly as certain herself is one of the goats in women's cycling. - Absolutely, and this is the first time

- Come on. - She loves her dog flow. She trains with her dog and a backpack. It's so much, like so many times. - I was looking at the flowers, like the dog thing

we're done, but this part of Holland, I've spent a lot of time in this part of Holland. It is all greenhouse, isn't it? If you fool over, you would look down and just say, I mean, it is as far as the eye can see, these greenhouses.

And this is what they produce. I mean, all over the world are getting these beautiful flowers, and I didn't know she grew up in those parts. - She's actually trained as a florist. Their family still looks like a big,

yeah, specialized painted as special like hydrangea bike. - And it's a big business. I mean, these things are, yeah, it's a lot of flowers.

“But she, I think, though, we were talking about it”

before the show is that anything that happened yesterday, that's close now because there's no doubt. - Oh no, yeah, that's right. It's interesting, too, just to go back to where she was born and raised, 'cause I think people oftentimes

assume that the best climbers in the world certainly were American, you were born and raised in Colorado, or you were, you know, mountainous part of California, or if you were, well, I'm getting to that. If you're a pin, you were born in the Alps or the Pyrenees.

I mean, if you saw where Demi was raised, I mean, you cannot find a flatter place on earth. I was born and Dallas raised in Plano. It's not as flat as where she is from,

The only thing we have is wind.

So, kids, you don't have to be born in the mountains to ultimately become a climber. I mean, I think we are born to be certain things, but the places that you learn to ride on and start riding on when you're young,

that doesn't necessarily dictate your specialty later on in life. - Well, also, we're even up, because you were talking about living in niece, so you were living in...

- All right, that's my robot, right by the old house. - She now lives in Switzerland, right? So, I mean, yeah, I mean, that's a fact. I mean, she could not prepare for the Tour de France amongst the Greenhouses.

“You have to, once you figure out your super strength,”

then you have to train that super strength and play to that super strength, which, I didn't know I had to ask you all when we were watching 'cause she's still living Holland. - She lives in Switzerland.

- Which is obviously the perfect place for her to live. - She loves the Alps.

They always go her and her partner, Yana always go out camping

with the flow of the dog and they take up for a big training camp. So, we were talking about different preparations, but her preparation is a lot about joy and adventure. So, it's less like serious.

- And it worked for her. - That's for sure. - It does. But I mean, we did show this on our show the other day, but Mount Vantu was her first climb she ever did.

And so she just knows that the younger Demi is proud of her and her proud of her. - Yeah. And today she was, as we mentioned yesterday, that fourth and final circuit was different.

It didn't seem a whole lot harder. And it was just so interesting how, of course, Cassia attacked. When she attacked, you could see Cassia that was everything. She was said, I have, this is, you know what?

You know, full props.

“Like you have to try to win the bike races.”

So therefore, she had to go as hard as she could. And you could see it. - And at the steepest point, right? - Right. - In the perfect place now, you know, Demi,

as we watched her behind her, like, oh, this lady is fingers in the nose. And you were like, okay, this is she is totally in control. But for her to then get past the steeper section and over the top, you know, the, the grunk cornice

is not very steep. And for her to just ride away like that, it's, you know, she got the gap. It goes to 50 seconds. - From that side too.

- Right, just rode her off the road. - 50 seconds, 30 seconds. Next thing, you know, we're starting to have the conversation like, okay, this is over. Just be careful on the downhill.

And no, I mean, she got it up to a minute. And she of course was able to manage the downhill. - Definitely wanted to prove a point. - Yeah, she definitely wanted to prove it. She was trying to protect her teammate yesterday,

worried about what people were saying on social media, things like that. But we entered today with eight seconds. We exited with one minute and 18 seconds. So Demi, point proven.

But Lance, like totally different than the tour de France famine. No, wait, tour de France, affect the men. - Effect dudes. - Effect dudes.

- That's probably better one, I like that. - Totally different, because we did it now. And we come in and then it just is explosive and exciting. - Well, we had five changes of the jersey. - Right.

- I mean, that's pretty unbelievable. And there were so many different ways that the race ended. I mean, when what was her name again, Cigrid, her ride off the road.

Every day, it's got better and better. The racing was exciting and just the whole way through. - You were on your edge of the seat, like you were like, what is this so exciting?

But back to what we said was gonna happen today. Eight no parade. There's no 41 K to go, GC's over everyone. Let's just go during Champagne. This was game on race on to the finish.

- Yeah. - And I think we have a very different - Definitely went in there to break up this race with Zoe backstit on the front that. - She was climbing out of her mind.

- Yeah, and dropping everyone. I mean, she just would old that group down to where, you know, both she and Demi, those both teams only had one other, you know what she's gonna do. You know, I mean, they definitely went into race today.

- Which I think says a lot about Casia and how likable she is. I mean, I don't know her and I can just kind of watch the television and try to pick up on things. But here's, you know, which I'll set the star by all accounts.

She's leaving that team to get those riders who know that you're my teammate today, but you're, you know, in six months time, you're not gonna be my teammate. To get them to commit like that

and to open up the race.

“I think it says a lot for how well-liked she is,”

and I, you know, it's funny. I often don't care about those things or think about those things 'cause it just doesn't matter to me much, but it matters in cycling, actually.

I mean, this thing, bike racing is obviously and things like the tour or I think some of the most extreme endurance tests in the world, but they're also very political.

Like these are things you always have to have friends.

You always have to have allies and to see that team commit like they did for a team leader that most likely is leaving. I think it just shows you how cool she is. - She's super cool, yeah, really, really nice.

And she is leaving it to little track and she's got to multi-year contract there. She had a great teammate with her today. She had Antoni O'Neill to Meyer and Lance, you called it earlier.

You have been making things like, I don't know. - Three calls, let's look at you. - I am, I don't know, I am taking my smart pills.

about Marlon Racer. I mean, she was, look, she wrote an exceptional tour. She won the time trial, she was in yellow. She wrote it for her and her capabilities and her style of riding, she wrote an unbelievable fun too.

Maybe too good, if you look back on it. And as I said, Jessica, I said, if she has a bad day and seen Longorborn Gini yesterday, she is getting third. And Marlon Racer is dropping down.

Now, I'll also give Marlon Racer props 'cause she and one of these people is like, I have to fight to stay on the top 10. Once she lost the podium, I think, I mean, we had to sit around forever

to see her cross the line. The doctor was like, you know what? - That's over.

“- Yeah, she had a braid, I think she deserved that braid.”

- Yeah, well, she got, she was suffering and on the early circuits got dropped and then unfortunately crashed and that was it. But I think she leaves, you know, a few to told her before the tour,

listen, you can come in, you can win the time trial, you're gonna wear yellow a couple days,

you're gonna finish third or, you know,

high up on the ball too. Do you take it right now sign? Sign this contract, she says absolutely. So for hers, 10 out of 10. - Yeah, her project, D-John, in the yellow jersey,

was perfect. - Project, what is that project? - The time trial was in D-John. - Oh, there you go. - And yellow jersey and mustard is yellow.

Anyway. - You're right. (laughing) - I'm right, I did think I was losing my mind there at the end 'cause I was, you know, I was,

we were watching Demi so closely. And of course, this day and age, and all the sponsors, all the manufacturers, they wanna just just make everything so cutesy and everything color-fied and all this other stuff.

And at one point, they showed her picking up a yellow bike. And I thought, hang on a second. Have I lost my mind? And I was like, trying to do this interview.

“- I know you were asking, and I couldn't remember.”

- I was trying to do this inventory, I was almost like rewind that. - Yeah. - Like Kanye said, "Dish a bell." We rewind that.

(laughing) - I hope that reference is right. - I'm sorry. - It's like why you were talking to him. - One of the funniest clips on YouTube ever.

We said about that. - We said about that. - We said about that.

- The first time you met Kanye West, rewind that as well.

- As a true story, you can tell. It's been a long month for the old man here. - But it reminds me of what you were talking about the other day when she, who was it they've finished on the spare bike.

Remember, somebody finished on the spare bike. - No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. - And we were talking about how any little change makes such a difference. And so, her not writing that bike made a lot of sense.

- Listen, I mean, once we kind of figured out that that was just a photo opportunity, I immediately said, "Look, dimmy balluring knows." - Colt does it on video, if he did. - But yeah.

So there's the finish, right?

“There's the bike that she has written for nine days.”

- It's the same bike, too, same brand, same horses. - This is a door point, what we've been saying. It may seem minor, but it's not because she's so comfortable on that bike. She knows that anything can happen today.

It's a super critical day.

Kids don't change. Stay on the equipment that's been working for you and as we've always said, you can get everything right. It never feels the same. And she chose to stay on the bike,

which I think is super, super smart. Now, not ideal for the sponsors and the manufacturers, but she held strong on that and said, "No, I have to stay on the gear that's been working for me.

I love it." - Yeah, it's the same thing. - That's her SL9 that's custom painted for European championship. And of course, they had that yellow bike ready for, which they knew that.

- She would have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours on that bike. - Yes, this is her daily driver of the bike. This is her race bike that she loves. And we did talk about this. We had questions on the other day a little bit on gearing.

So I double checked to make sure. I looked at what costume was riding and I did double check with blaze. He works for some. But at 50, 37, so 2 by no one was riding the one by.

Maybe that's even a bike weight issue. I'm not sure, but that course was so fast on the downhills. But 50, 37 and a 10, 33. You can't go up to a 10, 36, but it looked like to us.

It was a 10, 33. And Lance, you just was blowing your mind that they even needed a 33. And I'm like, why not 36? - Oh, we've talked about this.

- And those legs, yeah. - Yeah, I mean, I think if, because you don't know what the race is gonna throw at you. So if those, if the first circuit or two or just if people are tired, it's not animated,

well, then you have to ride in a 32. But it wasn't that. This race was on and so they didn't necessarily need it. But it's, you know, it's a bailout gear and a gear where you can just conserve.

And I don't hate that. I don't think a lot about gear race shows anymore. - I bet there were a lot of girls in the group's back who are happy that they had the 32, 32, 30, 30, 30. - Yeah, exactly.

- What's telling you, more gear. You know, who was impressive, too, was the-- - It's a better thing.

- Oh, like getting over the first climb

to take the points. - This is crazy, Lance, did you know this? - He blows the, the close-up points where between Damie and Lorraine.

“- Well, that's what Marys said, and I mean--”

- 34 points. - Yeah, I mean, right now, so as it finishes, Lorraine and Lorraine leave us 181 points, Damie ballering with three stage wins and a bunch of other play scenes, 152 points.

So it's-- - Yeah. - So she wanted those points. - Yeah. - But he only needed a few, so she got him then she sat up and had her as done, but she was in there.

The group was already small. - Yeah. - And Pucodot jersey stayed the same. I'm keeping Pucodot. - Yeah, I don't know.

Where do we go, it seems like we're shaping up. I mean, now we're like, we can't do a stage preview. But it's kind of fun to think about 2027. You've got, and we were just kind of doing a quick scan of some of the ages.

This is a sport, a hard sport that ultimately you do age out of. Demi's official race age 29. Casti is official race age 31. You've got some young riders coming up. Of course, Paul Lane, you know, if you were to ask me,

I honestly, I don't know. - I don't know. - I don't know if the injuries are such that it is just hard to combat. It injuries and surgeries, it's just hard to come back from.

I wanna say that she will be back. But this race is so exciting, right? It's so different than the men's race. But you kind of have to start to get excited already for 2027.

- Well, one of the things that's interesting is in the top five of the GCE. There are two, like U24 riders, which in both of them worked very hard on their team. You know, Needemire, Ambalazi.

Both were completely working for their leaders. So, I mean, those are two big up and coming ones

“who I think are gonna be really exciting”

to watch for a lot of years. So, you know, I mean, they're just a lot of them coming up. And it's hard for Canada. That's really exciting, too. - As she was a way and got caught.

- Fun fact about-- - And then stayed there. I mean, we commented, like, hang on a second. She's not normally gets spit out the back when you get caught. She was right there.

- And she was eight, she was eight, then GCE. So, I mean, yeah, it's 21 years old. Her twin sister also races for Little Trek. She wasn't out the tour. But she's a world champion, U23, mountain bike, cyclicross.

So, she's this is her new and road. She has taken the best young rider jersey at the Giro. But I thought she had a very impressive ride. Today you liked it. It was exciting.

- Yeah. - She was shooting the hammer down for sure. And you know what I'm excited about this race? You can look forward to lenses that's whipped. As a title sponsor, the Tour de France fun, the next whipped.

“- I mean, if you want to watch an exciting bike race,”

then watch this one. I'll put today, you know, today was, I mean, Demi was so dominant and she was interested in the master and the post race interview, did you ever panic? Like on volunteer where you panicked?

And I was, I was so surprised. She said, no, like I would have been panic. And she said, I wasn't nervous. I waited too late, but I wasn't nervous about it. And I thought, wow, that's somebody who knows what's up with what's up.

- Somebody who's confident. - Very confident. And we saw it. - Yeah. - And you saw it even there in the last 500 meters on volunteer.

And I said, I was like, wow, it's almost like she knows what's about to go down. - Yeah, she did. And I think she was super confident. She was doing those seated, just staying with it.

But I was thinking about this, Lance.

So I don't like always compared to the two

or two friends, Rebecca dudes. But it's very rare that you caress the final climb, whether it's Vaughn 2 out to Wes, all those epic climbs in France, that then the yellow jersey changes after that. And usually it's only been in a time trial.

“This is, I think, a pretty unique situation where it came”

from really dynamic racing, attacking in the unexpected zones. And I mean, I can think about Robloach versus Poguchar, but that's a time trial. Most of it was time trial and where those, can you, I can't think of anything else.

- Three out of the last four days were surprises. - Yeah. - I mean, if you go back to Cassius climb up, Vaughn 2, I don't think we all expected her to be there to have a good ride.

I don't think we would have predicted she was what have had the single greatest climbing performance in women cycling ever. That's amazing. The stage yesterday, we didn't see that coming.

And honestly, I didn't see today coming. I thought Demi is in a perfect place. Like stay there, control things, don't fall down. - You were so nervous. - I was nervous.

I mean, I know these down, you can ask Marlon Rooster, like you can, the race takes us to all after nine days. This is a hard stage, like, you know, it's easy to miss a corner. - She's sharpener claws overnight, I'm pretty sure.

There's definitely some filing of those claws. She went out.

“- Well, I hope they keep the racing this way next year”

where they keep building all the way to the end. I mean, even though some of the sprint stages are the ones that we thought would finish more in a break or sprint, even though those didn't end up quite the way we had predicted, it was so exciting

and on such a tough stage at the finish. - I wonder if that starts to be, and of course we'll find out October when ASO releases the route for the men and women. - I wonder if this is, you know, the Tour de France

family of ex-wifters now, nieces their hometown, they're finishing town. - I would love that. - And ultimately, as we said in the men's race, if it is true, which the reports appear accurate,

the tire going to make the Champs-Lisay a park, not sure what I think about that, but they're gonna have to find a different finish there. - I mean, we broadcast from niece, 'cause Anna would love to come.

- Yeah. (laughs) - That's Marlon Rooster. - And I are saying, next year we're in niece. - We are in niece. - And what is wrong with this entire team?

(laughs) - Women, everybody's like, "Let's go here, let's go there." - George yesterday texted me. He's like, "Look, let's do it in the Highlands of North Carolina. It's the ASS of North Carolina."

(laughs) I said, "Well, find it with a woman." - Wrong with you people. - We are in Aspen. (laughs)

- It's just 'cause you're on the fair. - But I will say this. Well, I'll say two things. One George, we are not going to Highlands. - No, no, I'm number two.

- This idea of niece, all right. - Oh, please, did you just hear that? - Okay, okay. - But I have to say one of the things having race bikes for so long and watched what's going on in women's sports forever.

There's a big part of me that just wants to be a part of it. Like be there and actually feel it somewhat because it's so cool. Why don't want to follow it every day? I'm saying we can stay in niece and do our broadcast. - But like--

- Do binoculars count. - We got people from far away actually. - Yes, yes. - I feel it, though. - But you get to see what's going on in the women's sport.

Like that would be amazing.

- All right, I'll be in the studio.

- Poolside. - Poolside, I like this.

“- I think that wouldn't be a lot of deal.”

- I have some rosé. - And with that? - I'm like back to the rosé if gel make me go to your... Just kidding, Liz. Just hunt everybody listening.

- Long happened. - Kidding, not going back. - Right. - Uh-huh. - Are you paying for rents?

- They are, they are, I do think this is, and you saw it, like saw it in the race. And to do the thing that the South of France does have, obviously has incredibly hard writing. It has a lot of writing.

There are a lot of roads. And it's just endless writing. So you don't need to twist my arm on that. - I love it. (laughs)

I think we're in. (laughs) - Anything else? - I think I need to just thank you Lance

- Awesome. - What kind of amazing? - We called it. Like, it lived up to it, like I did. - I saw these folks the other day,

and they were, you know what I was like, "Yeah, now we're doing the women's race." And they were like, "Oh, wow, really wow, you're done." It's been a long time. You've been said, "You know, but this one's actually close."

This is exciting. Like, I don't know what's going to happen. - We need our questions. - Oh, shoot. The voicemails.

We are getting away. - No, we're so excited. - So we'll get to our time limit and have to take a commercial break. (laughs)

- Goldman, I'm my bad. And we're not going to give you the number 'cause you can't call us and the voicemail 'cause we're not going to be here tomorrow. - Color number one.

- Hey Lance, I'm John Alderstein from Central Illinois. I was wondering if you could have found on team selection. How does a team get selected? And how soon do they have to select that team

before the start of the race? - Thank you, Susan. - I don't know. It might have changed now. I look, all I know is what I experienced with Yohan

and he took a military approach to selecting the team. And of course, in my generation or my time, nine riders, now they're down to eight riders. And you have a couple alternates, but he would go through it and his process

of selecting the team was obviously was perfect

'cause it always worked out.

But, and here's the thing, is you're always going to have people. Nobody wants to be the alternate. And nobody wants to not even be considered an alternate. Like they are going to be people upset every single year.

And those people feel like they deserve to be on the team. Now, and it also gets hard. Like he went a tour when two tours, when three tours he start going. These guys are like, dude, I like how I do is make the team.

'Cause if I at least just make the team, then I'm gonna be on the team that wins the tour. So then the pressure and the stress of all that really compounds

“and then if you have to leave people at home,”

which inevitably you do, I mean, if you have a team of 22, 24 riders, that's a lot of people stay in home. Same goes for the women's tour. But it was a whole process with him

that we'll have him on another time, but he would have all these spreadsheets, his strengths, weaknesses, and a point system. And then the end he was like, yep, there it is. I mean, obviously I was selected.

He would say, there's already guys,

and there's the two alternatives.

- Did you have any play in that, like when you want to select the team, you're like, I don't really like that guy's will that much. - A little bit.

But it would personality is more important than wheel. - Yeah. - You're going to be going to live with guys for three weeks on the roads and hotels, dinner tables, buses, personality matters.

I think the race is being shorter. Does make the racing more dynamic. There's less time for the break getting a ton of time, the nature breaks, the as the race is going.

I just saw a quote on him. He's a fan of this shorter days, just because it makes it more explosive and dynamic. Smaller teams, shorter days too. There's not a rest day.

They are like, like we talked about the beginning in our preview shows. This is all or nothing. You got nine days. - Well, and Demi proved to be in her own class at the end.

But when we went in, we didn't know that one person was going to be able to walk away with it. And the way the racing developed, it was really exciting. So each day got better, yeah.

- And look, let's be honest, Tate is Tate is Tate. I mean, he is the greatest of all time. If you certainly have the greatest male cyclist of all time. And I would say that he's just the greatest of all time period. So when you have somebody that good,

like there's nothing that anybody can or I don't care who it is.

If you had the equivalent of that

it would start to, you know, we don't have that. - Fortunately. - I think it's exciting. And it makes it exciting whether they play around with the stages and the length of the stages

and how they structure the tour. But I mean, we're just blessed to have, let me look at the end, Demi West. Demi West Tate asked yesterday and today. But she wasn't on the bond too.

For whatever reason, whether she waited, or whether she was in this thing with Royce or whatever was going on, that doesn't matter. Like this was exciting. And so we've benefited from that.

We have covered 1174 kilometers, 18,000 meters of climbing. First time we've ever been on the Montvon 2 in this race. And five different women in the jersey from eight seconds to a minute and 18. This was just, Lance, like I said,

The men's tour, the women's tour doesn't matter. She's a deserved winner. And so she demonstrated that in spades today. But I'm with you, you know, thanks ladies. Thanks to everybody for tuning in
